Cathy's Corner - I’m drafting this at 1 a.m.

It's about 2 1/2 hours past my bedtime. Why? Because I felt that it was important to capture the moment right when it happened. At the exact time the wheels started falling off the bus.

Those who know me understand that I’m all about creativity, innovative concepts, sharing your message in a unique way. I love the challenge of a new project, the rush of fresh ideas and the thrill of forging an untraveled path ahead.

There is pride and self-assurance that comes with knowing you are highly skilled in your area of expertise. Understanding where you are most effective, impactful and beneficial to others can bring an elevated level of confidence and competency. But honestly, sometimes there is comfort in sticking to what you know.

Knowing your strengths is a great thing.

Knowing your weaknesses...even more valuable at times.

I’m thinking I may have reached a tipping point in the 15+ month pandemic where my weaknesses are lurching to the forefront. Now is not a time to ignore my intuition…and yet, I did.

So here I sit at 1 a.m., writing to you after having taken it a little too far. It’s nothing that can’t be fixed with time and a good brow pencil, but nevertheless, my advice to you is, to some degree, when times are uncertain, stick with the things you know.

Eyebrows are not one of those things for me.

While I have shown great restraint with not cutting my own hair, nobody warned me or prepared me for the unruly nature of neglected brows. One day they are fine and the next you’re feeling like an 80-year-old man who has been stranded on a desert island for 5 years.

The length! The unexpected growth! The sheer volume and bulk!

And of course, we all have a bit more free time now, so the pre-bedtime ritual has been extended. It has led to extra time staring into the magnifying mirror wondering, “When did I start looking a bit like my Dad in drag?”

(That mirror is both a blessing and a curse. I swear you can see into your soul when it’s on maximum magnification.)

And that’s when it happened: max magnification, a few wilful and wayward eyebrow hairs and a tiny pair of scissors all came together to form a perfect storm.

(Let’s just say, some of my videos will be shot from a distance for a little while. Or maybe with sunglasses.)

Yes, creativity and forging new paths are imperative. I will always champion that. New ways of thinking and pushing boundaries are important. Showing that you are powerful, a thought leader, a trailblazer in your industry is important... And that’s the key sometimes: “in your industry,” in your area of genius.

Know your strengths — that’s where you’ll make progress in leaps and bounds and that’s where your skills can help move others forward too.

But also know your weaknesses. I don’t want to tell you that there should be limits to your awesomeness…but there should definitely be a few limits to mine — and those limits most definitely involve not sculpting my own eyebrows!

So, hats off to all you powerful thought leaders and trailblazers! You go! Blaze those trails, lead those thoughts and change those minds... and if it’s important to you, also pack your brow pencil. Or better yet…the name of a fabulous esthetician who will hopefully be able to re-open for business soon. Unfortunately, just not soon enough, in my case!

I don't know how long I have known you, but let's just say a couple of years. Although I don't worry about my eyebrows (haven't hit the 80 year old man yet) this did bring a little chuckle.

I was really worried about you....until I realized eyebrow maintenance was your nemesis. Good luck and speedy growth!
