Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship Students Conduct Conservation Research at Winchester
Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship
Supporting traditional craft skills for the conservation & maintenance of cathedrals & historic buildings.
A group of Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship students recently engaged in a focused research project at Winchester Cathedral as part of the Foundation degree Practical Historic Building Conservation module. The module, aimed at equipping students with practical skills and historical insights, allowed them to delve into a specific area of the cathedral's heritage.
During their time at Winchester, the students immersed themselves in archival research, uncovering valuable records pertaining to their designated area within the cathedral. These documents provided insights into the historical context and evolution of the selected site.
With their findings in hand, the students proceeded to analyse the conservation needs of their designated area. They carefully documented their observations and formulated treatment recommendations tailored to preserve the historic fabric of the cathedral.
The culmination of their research was a presentation where students shared their findings, treatment recommendations, and conservation considerations specific to their area of focus. Their thorough analysis and proposals demonstrated their commitment to preserving Winchester Cathedral's cultural significance.
In addition to their research endeavours, the students had the opportunity to explore Winchester Cathedral firsthand, immersing themselves in its architecture and history. They were warmly welcomed by the cathedral's works department and had the chance to meet the dedicated team responsible for its maintenance.
The success of the module was made possible by the support and guidance of the Winchester team, who provided assistance throughout the students' research journey. Their expertise enriched the students' learning experience, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in heritage conservation.
As the Cathedrals' Workshop Fellowship students conclude their time at Winchester, they depart with valuable knowledge and skills in historic conservation. Their experience underscores the significance of hands-on learning and focused research in safeguarding our cultural heritage.
