Cathedral Thinking

I heard an interesting concept discussed on Radio 4 this week – regarding this notion of ‘Cathedral Thinking’; the focus driven partly how (the current) crisis can drive change and innovation. But also, the programme also clarified the meaning of the concept – that this kind of forward, big thinking/planning (boldly instigated by Medieval cathedral designers) is based on future generations benefiting rather than instant gratification or success. https://bbc.in/2R4qy4w

The discussion also highlighted past (and today's remarkable young and current visionaries) thinkers like Joseph Bazalgette - he of the extraordinary sewer system in London prioritised by the 1858 Big Stink crisis. Bazalgette designed and built not for the present, or quick profit and quick result but one that has lasted to this day; he achieved this by making the design and building materials and methods fit for future purpose, robust and extremely long-lasting.

This brings me to the inevitable crisis-comparison with business - that yes, we do need to focus on blue-sky, definitely long-term ideas and innovations. And also, use the current earthquake-like situation for most businesses to re-group and think through current planning and, even core our business practices. But we must still allow ourselves - like generations of Medieval Cathedral builders - to continue with the nitty-gritty of the real building blocks of collecting materials, carving and cutting, cement mixing and making sure foundations and walls are solid now and for after Covid-19.

I, for one, am certainly hoping that post-crisis, business will more likely be’taking the longer view’ outcome and will want to put less emphasis on instant success, E.G. share-holder financial gain or on-the-minute ‘trending’ business ventures with no real chance of longevity.

Over 30 years, I have seen RFID technology developing and being (slowly at first) adopted - and at times not without criticism and problems - but as always @RFID is holding steadfast in the knowledge that automatic data capture is here to stay - genuine and proven -contributing to: improved safety, reducing waste, and increased sustainability of the manufacturing process. Think I’ll be sticking with it!

Great analogy Frits. The focus in Wales in this area with the well-being of future generations legislation is ahead of much of the world. I hope that the current upheaval means that is only a start on that path.

Some very important points in there that we all need to think about coming out of this situation. It would be a wasted opportunity I think if we just went back to work as usual.
