Category Management & Procurement: A Perspective from an East Africa thought leader.

Category Management & Procurement: A Perspective from an East Africa thought leader.

As someone who has navigated the fast-paced worlds of e-commerce and procurement, leading commercial, procurement, partner relations and category management roles at Kapu, Copia, M-Kopa and GlaxoSmithKline, I've seen firsthand the transformative trends shaping the industry today.

Whether you're just starting or deep in the game, here are some key focus areas:

  1. Sustainability-Driven Procurement More businesses in East Africa are prioritizing sustainable sourcing to meet both regulatory demands and growing consumer consciousness. Procurement managers need to align with suppliers offering eco-friendly and ethical products, which is an opportunity to build long-term, responsible supply chains.
  2. Data Analytics for Decision-Making The role of data in procurement is becoming indispensable. Leveraging advanced analytics to predict demand, optimize inventory, and negotiate better terms with suppliers is no longer a nice-to-have but a must-have for professionals aiming to stay competitive.
  3. Supplier Collaboration and Innovation Collaborative relationships with suppliers are crucial for driving innovation. In East Africa, where local manufacturing is booming, category managers should work closely with suppliers to co-create value (private labels are a big opportunity in retail), tailor products for local markets (smaller packs, unique designs, creative sourcing), and streamline costs. This trend is especially powerful when working in sectors like FMCG and retail.
  4. Digital Procurement Transformation E-procurement tools are revolutionizing procurement processes. From supplier onboarding to payment, digital platforms reduce lead times and enhance transparency. It's important for young professionals to stay tech-savvy and explore how tools like AI and blockchain can improve procurement efficiency. An example is the Tendersure Platform (https://www.tendersure.africa/) which has simplified the end to end procurement cycle from supplier identification to tendering to contract management.
  5. Agile Category Management With the global supply chain disruptions, being agile is essential. Shifting demand patterns require category managers to constantly adapt their strategies, diversify suppliers, and reduce risk. Embracing flexibility is key to maintaining resilience and service continuity. I had the priviledge of navigating Copia through the Covid period, the challenges brought about by the war in Ukraine and Russia, the drought period in Kenya, the Locus invasion, two election cycles, finance bills that change tax and regulatory frameworks, and all of these have brought with them unique challenges but also, very good opportunities to thrive if you are agile enough.
  6. Localization of Supply Chains There's a growing focus on local sourcing in East Africa. Supporting local suppliers not only drives economic growth but also reduces dependency on foreign markets. Category managers should look to develop relationships with local businesses and artisans, ensuring both quality and reliability. I am big with wiorking with SME's to create value for company's and supporting the local manufacturers and service providers.

For those navigating their career in procurement and category management, it's an exciting time to leverage these trends. Continuous learning, networking, and a focus on innovation will help both young professionals and seasoned experts stay ahead in this dynamic field.
