More than 4,000 consumers made history last weekend, when they purchased marijuana from the Great Smoky Cannabis Company store in Cherokee, North Carolina.
When adult-use sales began Saturday, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) became the first indigenous tribe to launch a regulated cannabis marketplace through sovereignty before its home state legalized any type of marijuana, according to a spokesperson for the tribe.
Some visitors traveled more than six hours to the remote town in the Southern Appalachian Mountains to purchase flower, edibles and concentrates such as vapes and tinctures.
Lines at the store lasted from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, as some shoppers waited a few hours to review the extensive menu and make purchases.
Through it all, the vibes were celebratory and thankful, according to Forrest Parker, a member of the EBCI and general manager of Qualla Enterprises, LLC , the vertically integrated cannabis operator owned by the tribe.
“This is the most inspiring thing that I’ve ever been a part of,” Parker told MJBizDaily on Monday.
“To walk the crowd and hear people thanking you for being there, that really gives you a sense of purpose.”
Planet 13 Holdings, Inc. announced its subsidiary would acquire Exhale Cannabis Dispensary in Las Vegas and related assets for $6.9 million.
The acquisition includes a 3,158-square-foot marijuana retail store in Las Vegas, the associated medical and recreational retail license, cannabis inventory and other assets.
Under the deal, which must be approved by the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board , Planet 13 will pay Exhale Brands Nevada $4 million in cash at the time of closing and $2.9 million – plus the value of cannabis inventory at closing – through a promissory note due a year from closing and secured by the acquired assets.
Anresco Laboratories and Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs have withdrawn their lawsuit against 13 competitors they allege manipulated marijuana testing results to win customers and business.
According to court documents, the two California-based labs filed a dismissal without prejudice on Aug. 3 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.
Josh Swider, co-founder and CEO of San Diego-headquartered Infinite Chemical Analysis Labs, told MJBizDaily he plans to file a new lawsuit against the defendants.
“We stand by the allegations and merits in the complaint filed in federal court,” he said via email.
“However, with further analysis, and as each of the defendants is aware, we anticipate filing a new complaint very soon.
“We look forward to providing further comment upon the filing of this new complaint.”
