Catch Up with RET (October 2024)

Welcome to Catch Up with RET. Each month, we highlight our work around the world and how we're making a difference on the lives of women, girls, and youth. Want to help us make a difference? ?? Make a donation today.

What can your donation do? Among other things, $50 can...

  • Help a single mother in DRC send her children to school – for the entire year.
  • Support a household in Niger for the entire month.
  • Double the income of a family in Peru, providing them with more nutritious food and/or better educational opportunities for their children.

For our U.S. supporters, we’re a 501(c)(3), and donations may be tax deductible.

This month's featured photo comes from Burundi, and the story behind it is available in its original French text with English translation.

Impact Story

We’ve been active in DRC since 2012 through a number of projects.

Since 2021, RET has worked with communities in the eastern regions of Democratic Republic of Congo to improve food security and promote peace in a conflict-torn area. In the village of Katoni, in the Ituri province, Evelyne spoke to us about how this work has impacted her life.

Together with local NGOs like ACPEJ, FDAPID, and PAP-RDC, we’re working to empower smallholder farmers in Ituri and North Kivu – to the south – by providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to achieve lasting food security.

In Brief

We're on the ground in 14 countries. Here's what we've been up to in just a few of them over the last month...

  • We're working to raise Awareness on Barriers to Education in Burundi. Through the KOMEZAWIGEZE program, RET organized interactive theatre sessions to raise awareness about barriers to education. Led by local Child Protection Committees, these sessions focus on the importance of birth certificates and encourage communities to support the reintegration of out-of-school children, especially girls.
  • RET is empowering youth through agricultural training sessions in Mali in partnership with ALPHALOG. With 724 eager learners, 106 of them women and 6 people with disabilities, these sessions are equipping youth with the skills they need to thrive in vegetable farming.
  • On September 21, we celebrated the International Day of Peace 2024 and extended our commitment to cultivating peace in our minds and actions. Since 2000, RET’s work has included a peace dimension to address the immediate and long-term needs of crisis-affected populations. We believe that peace must be nurtured in the minds of children and communities through education, spanning countries and generations.

Here's a roundup of a couple articles that take a deeper dive into our work.

  • RET in Türkiye brought together its protection teams for a crucial meeting at its central office in Ankara. The gathering brought together psychologists, social workers, and protection assistants from four community centers in Samsun, Aksaray, Kayseri, and ?orum, who are at the forefront of the “An Integrated Approach to Increase Resilience in Underserved Communities” project’s protection efforts.” Read more about how we strive to address the evolving needs of the communities we serve.
  • Adam Bello, a soft-spoken 60-year-old, has called the Sayam camp in Niger home since 2015. With a household of eleven—comprising three men and eight women—he carries not just the weight of his own family but also the hopes of a community. As the head of the “Himma” agricultural group and a key figure in the camp’s fish farming initiative, Adam’s journey is a testament to resilience and perseverance.
