Catch up with our quarterly updates (Q2 2024)

Welcome to Delft’s Quarterly Updates. Here, we will showcase stories of the fight against TB worldwide.

100th Publication Milestone!

CAD4TB has over 100 scientific publications now, covering topics such as TB, silicosis, and other abnormalities.

“CAD4TB is the highest-performing algorithm”

An independent comparison of the five CAD algorithms’ accuracy was conducted with a large, diverse, multi-national group of people with presumptive TB. Key groups included people living with HIV (PLWH) and diabetes, across seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Madagascar, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda), South Asia (India), and Southeast Asia (the Philippines and Vietnam).

CAD4TB had the highest overall accuracy (73.8% specificity at 90% sensitivity). It was significantly more specific than other algorithms and met the WHO's minimum accuracy target for a TB triage test. Additionally, CAD4TB's performance remained stable regardless of diabetes status, highlighting its value in TB-endemic regions with high diabetes prevalence.

Delft Webinar Highlights

In our recent Delft Webinar, experts from around the globe shared their experiences on Digital X-rays & CAD in Action: The Real-World Impact in TB Programs.”

Dr. Adeel Tahir, Director of the Mercy Corps TB program, discussed how they, with the National TB Program, have been using CAD4TB to improve TB detection in Pakistan. He was joined by Mr. Sohail Siddiqui, our country partner, who gave us insight into the deployment process and challenges faced. Together, they provided a comprehensive view of the recent large-scale roll-out.

Dr Jean Pierre Kabuayi from DR Congo’s Ministry of Public Health highlighted the benefits of CAD4TB and Delft Light in their country. Mr Julius Tumwine, the team lead at LabXpertDs and connectivity focal person for Uganda’s NTLP, discussed the impact of data connectivity in Uganda, where connecting CAD4TB data with lab diagnostics enhances their TB programs.

Stories of Impact

Early TB detection is the key to timely intervention and stopping transmission.

Here are some stories of TB screenings that inspire hope:

  1. Gavi recently highlighted how Uganda’s Ministry of Health is extending TB screening to remote TB hotspots with Delft Light, CAD4TB, and OneStopTB mobile clinics. Read the full story here.
  2. At a recent health conference, "Dust and Infection Free Lungs: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for TB and Silicosis," Dr Sandile Buthelezi, Director General of South Africa’s Ministry of Health, spoke about the impact of CAD AI in TB screening, and how it can help South Africa scale up the silicosis screening in occupational health settings efficiently. Read what other speakers said about leveraging AI for TB & Silicosis detection here.
  3. Our partners in Nigeria—KNCV Nigeria, the National TB Programme, and McPage—have been tirelessly working to eradicate TB. Recently, the Global Fund received 200 Delft Light units with CAD4TB to combat TB in Nigeria. We are extremely grateful to be a part of the project. Learn more in an upcoming Special Edition newsletter.

Our Footprint

  • At the 77th World Health Assembly, USAID's Assistant Administrator for Global Health, Mr Atul Gawande, discussed AI’s impact in TB detection. Under the iNTP project, countries such as Vietnam and Nigeria has improved TB detection by over 33% using CAD4TB and Delft Light, with molecular diagnosis. These solutions ease healthcare worker’s burden and accelerate TB diagnosis and treatment. Watch the speech here.
  • We were glad to participate in the 9th Asia Pacific Region Conference of the International Union Against Tuberculosis & Lung Disease- APRC 2024, in Taipei last month.
  • We were also a part of the 8th South Africa TB Conference in Durban last month, where we showcased our X-ray and AI solutions for TB and other lung abnormalities.
