Looking ahead, in a few weeks’ time, country leaders, private and public sector stakeholders will convene in Azerbaijan for the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 to deliberate on how climate finance can propel the "transition away from fossil fuels," as pledged last year in Dubai. Green finance and innovative climate solutions emerge as the common threads weaving through these dialogues, offering beacons of hope as we strive to accelerate carbon neutrality and ecosystem conservation in an affordable and equitable manner. This is precisely why the Eco Expo Asia 2024 is thematically centered on “Fostering Green Innovations for Carbon Neutrality”.?

The seminal annual Eco Expo Asia, jointly organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd, and co-organized by the Environment and Ecology Bureau of the HKSAR Government, serves as a platform where corporate leaders and innovative startups converge to showcase solutions spanning low and zero-carbon energy, waste management, and green finance. Scheduled for 4 days from October 30 to November 2 at AsiaWorld-Expo, the Expo also opens to the public for free on the final day!

This year’s Expo features an array of thematic zones aligned with the strategic pillars of sectoral and cross-sectoral decarbonisation, including Green Transportation, Waste Management, Circular Economy, Green Building Technology and Services, Green Finance & ESG-related Services, Startup zones. I am most excited about the return of the Startup zone, where cutting-edge green technologies will be on display. There will be exhibitors from Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, and Norway through the support of Innovation Norway for the first time, representing robust international participation. Additionally, various provinces and cities from Mainland China will be represented this year, with the Anhui Pavilion joining and the Inner Mongolia Pavilion making a return.

At the press conference today (17 October), we caught a glimpse of some highlights, such as the brand new design of 32-seater electric bus, water-soluble non-woven packaging material to combat plastic pollution, and fish feed derived from recycled food waste. I’m particularly impressed by the innovative eco-friendly packaging material that can completely dissolve in hot water without leaving harmful residues.

Furthermore, the inspiring Eco Asia Conference will be held during Eco Expo Asia 2024, offering a platform for government officials, industry leaders, and experts from various countries and regions to share insights on environmental challenges and opportunities. Noteworthy attendees include officials from ASEAN and Belt and Road countries like Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Don’t forget to check out the Sustainable Restaurant Awards 2024 to be presented during the Expo! It’s the first time for the award to account for the actual carbon footprint of restaurants. For sure it will turn into a new focal point for the sustainable catering sector, pushing for food system transformations!?
