Catalyzing scientific discovery through centralized brain research resources

The?NIH?Blueprint for Neuroscience Research supports the development and dissemination of new research tools and resources to assist neuroscience researchers and clinicians.

The NIH NeuroBioBank (NBB) was established in September 2013 as a national resource for researchers using human post-mortem brain tissue to advance understanding of the human brain in health and disease. This crucial resource aims to:

  • Increase the availability of human brain and tissue samples by increasing public awareness of the value of tissue donation for understanding brain health and disease
  • Facilitate the distribution of high-quality, well-characterized samples for the research community
  • Provide a centralized resource of best practices and protocols for acquisition, preparation, and distribution of tissue samples

The NBB serves as a central point-of-access to six biorepositories. These biorepositories distribute thousands of samples per year to the research community studying neurological, developmental, and psychiatric disorders. The NBB provides researchers with a wealth of resources to facilitate their research, including medical records and clinical data sets (when available) as well as access to quality metrics and?best practices?used by each site.?
