CAT RIN's “New Surrealism” Image: “Jarcaranda Skyscape” 2020

CAT RIN’s “Jarcaranda Skyscape” was created in 2020 using an iPhone —the second in her new series “New Surrealism.”Her unique archival photograph 35.5 x 60 inches is a large-format Diasec flush-mounted print, ready to hang.

CAT RIN, a Canadian-American contemporary feminist artist, captures the contrast of vivid colors of the clouds and the sunlight casting a lush translucency across the purple Jarcaranda flowers. Living at the very southern most edge of Phoenix, Arizona USA, CAT RIN spends many hours exploring her community and parks. Usingsurrealism, her masterful eye and the freedom of feminist’s sensibilities she creates “Jarcaranda Skyscape” an “inspired expression of nature’s profound beauty.”

Employing a range of photographic methodologies to create a surrealistic ambience, CAT RIN suggests human characteristics (anthropomorphism) to objects and distorted projections or anamorphic images to suggest erotic sensibilities that draw in thoughts beyond viewing a skyscape. CAT RIN suggests, “Throughout my life I have appreciated the complex patterns in objects, life forms and sounds. Subtly using surrealism in my creative endeavors, I instinctively respond to the emotional and aesthetic influences around me.”

Biography: In the late 1960s CAT RIN (b. 1952), began her artistic pursuits when she was a young teenager living alone in central London near Soho and supported herself by drawing portraits and reading poetry at Speakers’ Corner in Hyde Park. CAT RIN’s time in London and hanging around its “art scene” had a major influence on her independent artistic style. Today CAT RIN resides in Phoenix Arizona after a lifetime of traveling and living in numerous cities around the world that continues to inform her artistic perceptions.

Fed by her life experiences CAT RIN’s creative expression, whether fine arts, music composition, innovations and poetry among other outlets, gives her a deep understanding of cultural psychology juxtaposed with the natural environment around her. 

Highly creative and individualistic from an early age, CAT RIN recalls that when her father asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, she said without hesitation, “An intellectual.” CAT RIN’s artworks balance a distinct self-awareness, creative independence and a visceral sensuousness in contrast to her contemporaries. She had a visceral ability to appreciate and respond to complex emotional influences. 

CAT RIN’s art is raw. Her sensitivity and resolve challenges the moving beyond life’s tragedies by creating memorable surreal images often incorporating a combination of eroticism, nature and humor.

CAT RIN has mastered the interplay of different media by combining layers of her drawings, paintings, and photographs to explore renewed self-identification, “Through the creative process, it is my choice to embraces life’s obstacles and live a full and creative life without fear and distortion caused by trauma.” After 50 years of high creative output, CAT RIN continues to produce new provocative pieces, which adds to her long record of creative expression.
