Casumo Culture: The Secret Ingredient That Keeps Us Connected
At Casumo, work isn’t just about where you log in from—it’s about how we stay connected, no matter the location. Whether remote, hybrid, or based in one of our hubs, our culture is what keeps us together.
We have hub-based teams who enjoy the perks of office life while having the flexibility to work from anywhere. We have remote teams, thriving on virtual collaboration. And we have those who mix it up, blending in-person connections with work-from-anywhere freedom. But no matter where we are, Casumo culture is the glue that makes it all work—keeping us engaged, included, and part of something bigger.
To dive into how that happens, we jumped on a video call with Nikola Mirkovi?, our Senior Platform Engineer and Casumo “veteran”, to chat about virtual bonding, and what makes the hybrid culture at Casumo different.?
No Couches, No Cafés—Just a Proper Home Office
Nikola has been working remotely since 2017—long before the world collectively discovered the joys of sweatpants and video calls. Back then, he and a few colleagues worked from a shared co-working space. But as the company evolved, so did the setup.
These days? No co-working, coffee shops, sofa or “laptop in bed” situations. For Nikola, his workspace is strictly a workspace.
“When I work, I’m in my home office. I don’t move around—I see it as my professional space.”
The setup? Extra monitor, ergonomic chair, and a desk that does the job. But the biggest rule for him? Quiet surroundings—unless, of course, the right playlist is on.
The Soundtrack to Deep Focus
Speaking of music, Nikola isn’t just a casual listener—he’s a funky disco house DJ.
“I actually played at Casumo’s 10th anniversary party! Music is a big part of my life, but when I really need to focus, I switch everything off.”
Most of the time, though, his workday comes with a solid soundtrack—vocals and all. Because, as he says, music isn’t just about the beats.
But while he prefers silence for deep concentration, his team sometimes provides its own background noise—especially when cats, kids, and surprise guests crash video calls.
“Three of my colleagues just became parents, so now we have surprise baby appearances in meetings! It’s basically the new version of pets showing up on screen.”
Culture Over Everything
The biggest takeaway from our chat? At Casumo, remote work actually doesn’t feel remote.
“I’ve never felt alone or disconnected, and that’s not just because of Slack or Google Meet—it’s the culture. Technology makes remote work possible, but culture makes it actually work.”
It’s in the daily stand-ups, the spontaneous calls, the inside jokes, and the random Slack channels.
Nikola shared that his team has a “Monday Tech Memes” ritual, where they kick off the week with some quality internet humour. There’s also a music club where Casumo’s many musicians (yes, there are quite a few!) used to share clips of their playing.
And then of course there’s Donut, the randomised Slack pairing system that connects employees for casual, friendly chats.
“At first, you think it’s just a small thing, but then you realise—it’s actually great. I’ve met people from completely different departments, locations and cultures, and we’ve had conversations I never would have expected.”
Bringing New Team Members Into the Culture
For Nikola, it’s super important that new team members don’t just get thrown into the deep end of remote work without guidance.
“The biggest challenge with remote work is that new people don’t get to absorb the company culture naturally—there’s no ‘seeing how things are done’ by just being around.”
So how does Casumo tackle this? Proactive onboarding & culture introduction.
“We make sure to introduce them properly, include them in our morning rituals, and make space for casual chats. It’s the little things—jokes, Slack convos, a ‘good morning’ message—that make people feel included.”
That intentional effort means new joiners don’t just get a job, they get a team.
Remote Work, Real Connections
For Nikola, work connections don’t just stay virtual. Over the years, he and his teammates have built friendships beyond work calls and even sometimes plan trips based on where their teammates live.
“I live in Belgrade, and some of my teammates have visited. We’ve gone on trips together—it’s way more than just work now.”
If he could teleport to any Casumo hub for a day? Malta, hands down. That’s where some of his closest work friends are based, and a face-to-face catch-up is long overdue.
The Ultimate Remote Work Tip
When asked what advice he’d give to someone new to remote work at Casumo, Nikola kept it simple:
“Technology makes remote work possible. Culture makes it efficient.”
And that’s the secret. It’s not just about the tools, the processes, or the video calls—it’s about creating an environment where people genuinely want to be involved, wherever they are in the world.
A huge thanks to Nikola for sharing his insights! Whether it’s through music, memes, or morning stand-ups, Casumo proves that remote work doesn’t have to mean working alone.
When asked to sum up Casumo’s remote work life in just three words, Nikola didn’t hesitate:
“Responsible. Flexible. Fun.”
And honestly? That checks out.
