Cases from Classplus: A War for the Ages, A Lesson for a Lifetime! ??

The Kargil Vijay Diwas was observed yesterday with much emotional and patriotic fervor. With our nationalistic sentiments running high, many of us might overlook an important life lesson that this war brought with it.

This is the story of?turning a challenge into an opportunity?!

It all began in May 1999 when the Pakistani Army (with the help of Kashmir guerillas and Afghan mercenaries) invaded Indian territory overnight and captured key posts at Indian Kashmir, an attack that took years to plan. In any war situation in the Himalayan region, having a strategic location is equivalent to gaining a massive leverage. No enemy movement can take place from that route, without being spotted.

This is exactly what the Pakistani Army did by capturing the?Dras, Mushkoh,?and?Kaksar sectors?. It was the uphill challenge our Indian defense faced.?Firstly, the Pakistani Army infiltrated Indian territory, and on top of that, they took the ‘high ground’. Anyone would’ve succumbed in this unwinnable situation but not our jawans!

How did our jawans go about turning this challenge into an opportunity??

Our armed forces took the home field advantage to get the specific vantage points where our enemy had built their bunkers. We used all the local intelligence that we could (including inputs from local shepherds) to ascertain this information. Once we knew that, we took advantage of the enemy’s blindspots from up top, especially during the night. The Indian army built their patrols and battalions to plan an offensive right under their noses, turning this challenging position into an opportunity to regain lost ground. This mission was codenamed?Operation Vijay.

The rest is history, as we celebrated the 23rd Kargil Vijay Diwas yesterday! On this day 23 years ago, Indian forces captured Tiger Hill and other posts by routing out Pakistani forces and our former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared Operation Vijay a success. Let’s take this day to remember all the 527 brave heroes that laid their lives defending our sovereignty.
