Gartner defines Supply Chain Segmentation as “Designing and operating different end-to-end value chains (from customers to suppliers) optimized by a combination of unique customer value, product attribute, manufacturing and supply capabilities, and business value considerations.”
Why segmentation? Well, we struggle to balance efficiency, growth, and rising complexity. But with the limitation of resources, it is a wise approach to divide the end-to-end operating model into segments that simplify determining the right service levels, working capital and cost. You can apply the segmentation to multi-dimensions, including suppliers, products, markets, customers, channels, etc. And in some cases, you may need to apply a hybrid segmentation too!
