I want to share about the issue that is affecting most of my colleagues we went to college with. Most are lamenting about the scarcity of opportunities in the job market. It is everyone's expectations that after graduation, they would get employed, and start earning a living. The actual situation on the ground is the fact that in the current economy especially in my country, not most of these opportunities are being created, to meet the demand.
Employment seekers ought to know the causes of unemployment, for them to be in a good position dealing with the same. To save this topic for another day, I would just point out that unemployment in most cases is caused by demand deficient, structural, frictional and real wage unemployment. Most economists tend to focus on the demand efficient aspect which includes factors like high-interest rates that deter investment, financial crisis, global crisis and negative multiplier effects.
As graduates, we need to put ourselves in a different position from other employment seekers. One thing to remember is that we joined these institutions to seek knowledge, not employment. Using the knowledge sought, we are in a good position to creating employment opportunities to those that did not have the opportunity to access these institutions. We have at our disposal the chance to create a future for our peers and one for ourselves as well.
Most of my work has been online, making great use of technology that is now available and affordable. I have created a network with employers online, who offer from simple tasks to more complicated ones. Most people that in the past thought it was impossible, are now surprised that even big companies are employing workers online. The advantage of working online is the fact that there are less operating costs. This is because for the simple reason that one can work from their physical location.
As long as you have been in school with the basic knowledge, I believe you can learn anything if you have the passion. I went to school for B.Com, but I have done tasks in web-development, digital marketing, website management, content creation, brand promotion, transcription, auditing among many other tasks. All these tasks have been done remotely. My parting shot is that "Use what you have to make the best out of it." See you in the next one.
