Case Study: Second-Career Nurse Achieves Dream ER Role in California **Client Background:** Alicia, a nurse from California, reached out to me

feeling unfulfilled in her current ICU nursing role. As a second-career nurse with a strong background in leadership—she had been an independent contractor and operations manager in small business consulting within the commercial and residential construction industry—she sought a new challenge. Inspired to become a nurse after witnessing the compassionate care her father received during his struggle with a chronic illness, Alicia was determined to make a meaningful impact in the Emergency Room (ER).

Despite her passion, many told her that transitioning to an ER role so soon was unrealistic and that she should settle for a medical-surgical (med-surg) position. Alicia was even offered a med-surg role but knew it wasn't the right fit for her.

Objective:

I was determined to help Alicia defy the naysayers and secure her dream position as an ER nurse. My goal was to prepare her thoroughly for the opportunity, empower her to believe in her abilities, and navigate the hiring process effectively—ultimately leading to a significant career advancement and a substantial salary increase.

Targeted Strategy:

  1. Rejecting Unwanted Opportunities
  2. Gaining Clarity & Positive Mindset
  3. Enhancing Professional Network
  4. Intensive Interview Preparation
  5. Leveraging Leadership Experience

Results:

In the interview, the hiring manager was thoroughly impressed with Alicia's preparedness, especially her detailed responses to questions about managing sepsis and stroke patients. Her passion and expertise shone through so clearly that the manager said, "We are going to create a brand new position for you." They offered her a "Transition to Practice ER Position," specifically designed to bring her onto the team. Alicia developed the AUDACITY TO BELIEVE! She transformed into a fiercely confident Nurse and got exactly what she wanted!

The ER manager wanted her so much that she advocated internally to make this opportunity possible. Despite being told she couldn't secure an ER role so soon, Alicia not only achieved her goal of landing the offer in the Emergency Department but also received a $47,000 per year pay increase within 90 days.

As Alicia herself expressed, "I was told I couldn't get an ER job so soon. I was told I should go to med-surg. "Farah said, don't you dare take that Med-Surg Job! Farah is the queen of anti-negativity."

Conclusion:

Alicia's journey underscores the power of self-belief and targeted preparation. By refusing to accept limitations imposed by others and investing in her professional growth, she transformed her career trajectory and fulfilled her dream of becoming an ER nurse.

Alicia was so grateful and filled with joy for this opportunity, that she was brought to tears.

The creation of a brand new position just for her highlights how determination and the right guidance can lead to unprecedented opportunities.

Yes!! I couldn’t agree more. I was in a similar situation and it was quite discouraging hearing every single time “it’s highly unlikely you will get in the acute care setting you want” because of the gap in my resume (11 years) . Luckily, you Farah, and a couple nurse managers replied to a post I wrote on Glassdoor and I listened. You all said “do not listen and keep applying!” I did and I got the job! If recruiters cut you off or give you no as an answer you go and still request the interview with the manager. They have completely different backgrounds and different understandings of that is needed or really important to get the job ???? best of luck to everyone in this situation… you can totally do it!
