Empowering Water Efficiency: The Water Efficient Product Labeling Scheme (WEPLS)?

Water conservation is a crucial component of sustainable development, and the Water Efficient Product Labeling Scheme (WEPLS) is an exemplary initiative in this regard. The National Water Services Commission (SPAN) in Malaysia spearheads WEPLS, encouraging suppliers to develop and market water-efficient products while promoting water conservation and raising public awareness about the importance of water efficiency.

The WEPLS program, launched in January 2013, is voluntary, allowing suppliers the necessary time to transition toward more water-efficient products. Third-party laboratories accredited by the Department of Standards Malaysia (DSM) or other recognized accreditation bodies under the Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC) or the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) test and certify products participating in this scheme. The scheme covers five key product categories: water taps, water closets, urinal equipment, shower heads, and clothes washing machines.?

A Star Rating System for Informed Choices?

To make it easier for consumers to choose water-efficient products, WEPLS uses a three-star rating system. A product with one star is considered water efficient, two stars indicate high water efficiency, and three stars represent the highest level of water efficiency available in the market. This straightforward rating system empowers consumers to make informed decisions that contribute to water conservation.?

Significant Impact and Future Growth?

The impact of WEPLS has been noteworthy. More than 10 suppliers and manufacturers have already registered with the scheme, contributing to the marketing and production of water-efficient products. Additionally, the program is expected to increase the number of local accredited laboratories and certification bodies, providing valuable testing and certification services to support the industry’s needs.?
