Case study for the Hybrid Display Management in the Station

Hybrid displays are increasingly important for stations because they combine multiple technologies and functionalities to create a more efficient, adaptable, and user-friendly environment.

We would like to share 7 reasons for a crucial hybrid displays investment into the modernizing transit hubs.

1. Enhanced Visibility in Diverse Conditions

Hybrid displays, which often combine technologies like LED, LCD, and e-paper, are adaptable to various lighting conditions, whether it’s bright sunlight, dim station interiors, or changing weather. This ensures passengers can always clearly read schedules and updates.

2. Dynamic and Real-Time Information

The stations require real-time updates for arrivals, departures, platform changes, and delays. Hybrid displays can handle dynamic data effectively and showcase content in multiple formats, including text, graphics, and videos, ensuring travelers are always informed.

3. Multi-Functionality

Hybrid displays can serve multiple purposes:

Informational: Timetables, platform information, and travel advisories.

Advertising: Display ads to generate revenue.

Interactive: Maps or touchscreens for navigation or ticket booking.

Combining these in one system saves space and resources.

4. Energy Efficiency

Some hybrid technologies, like e-paper combined with LED backlighting, consume less energy compared to traditional displays. This is especially important for large, busy stations with high operational costs.

5. Accessibility and Multilingual Support

Hybrid displays can accommodate accessibility features (e.g., high-contrast modes, larger fonts) and multilingual content, catering to diverse passengers, including international travelers and individuals with visual impairments.

6. Scalability and Future-Proofing

Modern train stations need adaptable solutions. Hybrid displays can integrate with IoT systems and future technologies, enabling smarter data dissemination and interactive capabilities.

7. Improved Aesthetic and User Experience

Sleek hybrid displays contribute to a modern, tech-forward look for train stations, creating a more professional and welcoming environment for passengers.

enhance operational efficiency, provide a better passenger experience, and future-proof stations for evolving technological and consumer demands.

Case 1:Milan Central Station FRECCIA Lounge on Display

Milano Central is more than a railway station, a monumental marvel of architecture with its 200m fa?ade adorned with sculptures and reliefs of power and grandeur. Inside, the station, the large atriums and staircases that exude spaciousness. Completed in 1931, Milano Central is typical of the period featuring Art-Deco, and neo-classical styles of the time. The station remains the largest in Europe.

In keeping with the importance of the station, in June 2024, the new FRECCIA Lounge was inaugurated, offering an exclusive space close to platforms for eligible members. The lounge provides both a convenient refreshment points and a series of multimedia services designed to enhance the traveler experience pre-journey. The lounge brings not only Exclusive Comfort and Added Convenience for Premium Travelers, but also Enhanced Brand Image and Seamless Connection Experience.

Throughout the new lounge, a series of displays feature, with these varying from conventional LCD monitors to large format LED displays.

LCD TV monitors typically display news and current affairs channels, which LED displays, both as VideoWalls and featuring a transparent LED system not only are utilized with multiple video layers of broadcast media, messaging and graphics, but also provide architectural elements and flow, dividing the Lounge area within and from the platform area.

At the heart of this audio-video installation, a control room rack includes an RGBlink X7 universal video processor and video wall controller. The 32x32 video processor takes in this case HDMI inputs from multimedia players and routes and splices them to the LED screen controllers as well as routing media to LCD monitors via native HDBaseT outputs. Each display whether a single connection such as an LCD or multiple outputs need for LED displays, offering layered pixel-to-pixel scaled video layers – in some cases multi-layered video - with seamless switching between presets as they are switched independently and isolated from the inputs. In the case of the LCD panels, an RGBlink HDBaseT Decoder is employed to deliver HDMI to panels easily independently of type.

Explains Alessandro Giannelli, CTO of Leading Technologies Srl , "We chose RGBlink X7 because the processor offers a high level of flexibility in a single box, and for this project a combination of HDMI and HDBaseT modules could be fitted, allowing us to manage both LED and LCD screens simultaneously.”

Alessandro continues, "It has been a very successful installation, which we are working with client to continue further rollouts across the network and we are looking forward to utilizing RGBlink solutions as an important part of these projects."

Milano Central FRECCIA Lounge is the 2nd project just after Rome Central, which is powered by X7 also, good feedback is 7x24 running without maintenance required.

Case 2:London Euston Station on Display

Euston railway station is a major central London railway terminus managed by Network Rail in the London Borough of Camden. It is the southern terminus of the West Coast Main Line, the UK's busiest inter-city railway. Euston is the tenth-busiest station in Britain and the country's busiest inter-city passenger terminal, being the gateway from London to the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland.

Euston was the first inter-city railway station in London. It opened on 20 July 1837 as the terminus of the London and Birmingham Railway (L&BR).It was demolished in the 1960s and replaced with the present building in the international modern style.

When we worked on this article, great to get the news that Euston is to restore its display of travel information on the station’s large screen, after passengers indicated that they preferred information to advertisements.

This large screen resolution is 15120 x 1020 and managed by RGBlink Q16pro.

It is our pleasure to send the engineers for onsite training and support when "Network Rail has a five-point plan to improve passengers’ experience at Euston". Good to hear this large screen comes back with a sizeable focal point on the station’s concourse that provides travel information.

Case 3: Bus Station Control Room in South Africa on Display

The bus station control room upgrades from Analog to Digital for better collaboration and digital signals management. The project was postponed more than 4 years and finally installed done and delivered for daily running on 2024.

A Q16Pro in 8 unit size is installed to manage the mixed signal and present on the LCD video wall, also bridge the audio embedded in the signals to the main audio processing system.

This is a big step for the project and with its expandable design, the control room is ready for scalable for future connection.

Especially thanks to Luca A. great efforts who make this article and the 1st project happened!
