This 1970’s detached house had been unusually situated in the middle of a smallish plot, so there was a small strip of garden on all sides of the house but limited usable space.
THE BRIEF - Primarily the plan was to optimise the space; adding seating and entertainment spaces in all the sweet spots. Create steps which worked with the new bifold windows and a dining space adjacent to the house. All this needed to take into consideration Sydney the enthusiastic Cockapoo!
DESIGN CONCEPT & PROCESS - The back garden had a massive Laurel hedge along the back border which was taking up almost 20 meters of the garden, so that had to go. In its place we added 3 mature pleached hornbeam trees which add screening as well as giving a beautiful seasonal interesting outlook.
We created a new decked area for dining and as the sloping plot required a number of steps from the new lounge doors to reach the deck, we incorporated a built-in bench to harmonise the level changes and optimise space.
We added a new seating area in the back right hand corner of the garden which gets the afternoon sun and included a small seating area in the front garden which gets the evening sun.

The area to the left-hand side of the plot, was almost in full shade, with large neighbouring Leylandii dominating. Here we placed a shed and garden room which looks out onto new planting.
We added to a number of existing established shrubs with lots of new perennial and seasonal planting giving more colour and variety to the garden throughout the year.
TESTIMONIAL:
“A big thanks to Carole and the team for transforming our garden. What was no doubt a difficult project given the shape of the garden has left us very happy and utilising much more of our outdoor space than we could have imagined. All in time for the summer too!”
