CASE STUDY 11 - A Gifted Presenter

CASE STUDY 11 - A Gifted Presenter

Case Study 11 – A gifted presenter

Had no idea how easy this was for me until I was required to do it as part of my studies.

The issue I faced however, was that I was posted remotely at a client worksite. So, who would I be delivering this presentation to?

What was I going to present and how could I make it significant and purposeful?

First step of course was in defining what was important to my audience within my expertise of the time. Something topical was minimizing the cost and dangers posed by damaged freight in transit/in trucks/trailers. But how could I sell that?

Next thing I did was to define why this was happening.

This led me to the physics/behavior of stock in motion:

Inertia

Simple Harmonic Motion

Load and Leverage

?

?

But presenting data isn’t enough. I had to convey why this was important. Not a task requirement, just a personal ideology.

What was important to the client?

Mitigating costs:

Damages

Reshipment costs

Injury and accidents that stem from freight movement

Cost in quality and reputation

This all played a part in what I presented to the client.

That’s the why. Then I just had to wrap it up with solutions and question time.

Then this Yard Hand at the time, had to approach my management in order to approach the client with this presentation.

With the employer being satisfied with the quality of presentation, I was then allowed to deliver it to the client.

Not only was the client happy with the presentation, a tongue in cheque statement was made about one of their own staff; ‘You should teach ……. how to deliver a presentation!’ They loved it.

With my new found skill, I opted to do training as a Trainer Assessor.

Before doing this however, I wanted to do training as a Return-to-Work Coordinator.

This course also required the delivery of a presentation. This one was very much my wheel house. I delivered a presentation on ergonomics, but instead of being a 20min presentation, it turned into two and half hours. Fortunately, the audience was captivated and wanted to know more.

Of course this was a great catalyst for refinement. I needed to take a look at how to better refine my presentation.

Upon doing my Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, I went in with the refinement I needed.

I delivered a presentation on ‘The Four Key Elements of Skill’ and another on ‘Manual Excavation’.

I also drew up a training plan for securing loads.

Easy course for me and I was a natural.

However, this still didn’t allow me to get work as a Trainer Assessor with an RTO, nor qualify me to do training in the workplace.

Why?

Because in order for the certificate to hold any value, we must have an accompanying certificate in another field. Moreover, we are limited to only being qualified to train at the level and within the scope of that accompanying certificate.

The training I did as a Return-to-Work Coordinator had been made obsolete in the first week of acquiring it due to a certification being applied to the training and because I did the training prior to the certification. Consequently, I held a piece of paper that held no value. Best course I have ever done. High level of quality, but because I completed it before certification could be applied, I was screwed over. If this certification was there in the beginning, I could have been a Trainer Assessor for Occupation Rehabilitation for Return-to-Work Coordinators and been exceptional at it. But the timing decided otherwise. ??

I had no disposable income to throw at additional training. Just two worthless pieces of paper that didn’t support my ability to move forward into roles that I had proclivities for. Time invested that I will never get back and at that time I had an HR Manager tell me I was going to stay right where I was. So, I knew I had no way forward with this employer. I had to leave that employer in the hope of generating forward movement. But, as far as potential employers were concerned, my inability to progress was my own failing despite making proactive moves and reaching out to my HR manager with a desire to grow.

No ticket. No entry. No progression.
