The most valuable resource on the farm is the soil beneath your feet.
A central Wisconsin dairy farm had an 80-acre field which always produced a poor corn silage crop. But why?
Working with AgSource VAS agronomic staff the field was soil sampled on 2.5 acre grid for the first time. But how helpful those grid samples were about to become.
- Together they identified 50 of the 80 acres has very low pH.
- VAS staff created VRT recs to spread lime and raise the pH in specified areas. Note: Before the farm would have blanket spread lime on the entire field but they would have skipped this field because pH field average did not recommend a lime application.
The result:
? 3 years later the entire field yields quality silage for the dairy cows
? The 80 acres averaged 720 ton @ $32/ton or $23,040 income
? Cost of VRT lime application-- $6900
? Increased income by $200/acre!
