As a real estate lawyer, the prospect of the United States purchasing Greenland is both intriguing and complex. This concept gained traction during Donald Trump's first term as President, when he famously floated the idea. Now, as President-elect Trump revisits the possibility, the idea has reignited debate about its feasibility and potential benefits. If successful, such an acquisition could rival historic deals like the Louisiana Purchase in scale and significance.
Greenland’s Strategic Importance
Greenland, the world’s largest island, is over 836,000 square miles—larger than Alaska by a significant margin. Its location between North America and Europe makes it a geopolitical prize. As climate change opens new Arctic shipping routes, Greenland could position the U.S. to dominate these lanes, increasing trade leverage and enhancing national security. The Arctic is becoming a critical area for global powers, and Greenland’s location is pivotal for surveillance and defense against adversaries such as Russia and China.
Natural Resources and Economic Potential
Greenland is a treasure trove of untapped resources. Rich in rare earth minerals, oil, and gas, it could catapult the U.S. into a dominant position in global energy and technology markets. Additionally, Greenland’s potential for renewable energy projects—like hydroelectric and wind power—aligns with the growing global focus on sustainability. Its fishing industry is also a key economic resource, offering opportunities for development and trade expansion.
Negotiations and Potential Cost
Purchasing Greenland would not be a simple transaction. Negotiations would require the consent of both Denmark, which oversees Greenland, and Greenland’s autonomous government. The cost could be astronomical, with estimates ranging from hundreds of billions to even trillions of dollars. However, historical context offers perspective: the Louisiana Purchase, completed in 1803 under President Thomas Jefferson, cost $15 million (approximately $390 million today) and doubled the size of the United States. In the same spirit, the purchase of Greenland could represent a similarly transformative investment.

Legal and Governance Challenges
Legally, this deal would establish precedents for acquiring autonomous territories. Greenland’s population of roughly 56,000, primarily indigenous Inuit people, would necessitate thoughtful integration into U.S. governance. Policies that respect local culture, language, and traditions would be critical to building trust and ensuring mutual benefit. Infrastructure investments and environmental protections would likely form a key part of any negotiation to gain support from Greenland’s leaders and people.
Trump’s Vision and Strategic Leverage
President-elect Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland reflects his vision for America’s strategic and economic future. His approach may involve leveraging Greenland’s economic struggles and dependency on Danish subsidies to frame U.S. investment as a mutually beneficial opportunity. Trump’s characteristic focus on big deals could lead to creative negotiation tactics, including infrastructure pledges or economic incentives for Denmark and Greenland alike.
A Modern-Day Louisiana Purchase?
In the best-case scenario, purchasing Greenland would secure America’s dominance in the Arctic, unlock vast economic opportunities, and establish a historic legacy akin to the Louisiana Purchase. While the cost and complexities are daunting, the potential benefits—strategic, economic, and geopolitical—make this a deal worth exploring. President-elect Trump’s ambitious proposal could very well shape the nation’s future in profound and unprecedented ways.

Give them schools, hospitals, food, energy, infrastructure, transportation and healthcare along with secure retirements. Generational wealth. Much of this could be funded through royalties from mining natural resources. Seems like there is a deal to be made there. What’s Denmark been doing for them lately ? Could be one of the best real estate deals since the Louisiana Purchase.
