In case of emergency, keep your chin up

Howdy Ags,

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. The older you get, the more you seem to identify with that cliche, for better or worse. We're dealing with a crisis right now that none of us could have ever imagined and it's so easy to feel cheated. For that, I really feel for each and every one of you and I'm sorry you and all the other students out there are not able to experience some major life experiences as planned.

While you can't choose your circumstances, you CAN choose what you can do about it. Focus on what you can control, not every little thing that concerns you. Don't let this thing define you, but let it shape you. Keep your routine the best you can. Do things every day that make you better - physically, mentally, and spiritually. Trust me - it will make it easier when things get back to normal - whatever that ends up looking like.

About a year ago, I lost my job (albeit one I did not enjoy), and rather than choose to kick myself, I took a little time to reflect, helped some people, and learned some new skills while I found my next role. I knew things would get better, and they did - even beyond what I could imagine. The same will happen to each of you, it will just take some time. Patience is one of life's toughest traits. If I hadn't had patience, I would have probably ended up in another role I didn't enjoy. Instead (for once), I WAS patient, listened to my heart, and I tried something new, and I'm very thankful I did.

Learn something new (I'm learning Spanish with Duolingo - it's fabulous). Get out and do something if you can (I play disc golf - great for fresh air and keeping a distance from groups). Help someone if you can (I'm helping friends and family automate some things they don't like doing). For those of you able to continue your studies online, don't slack off! And most importantly, lead by example, with a positive attitude. That's what makes Aggies unique and great. We'll all get through this and be stronger because of it, if we choose to.

Thanks and Gig 'Em!
