The Case for Creating Annual Goals
The Power of Setting Your North Star
By Sri Peruvemba
As we move into a new year, the temptation is often to fall into the same patterns and habits. We float along, putting out fires, reacting to what's in front of us, but rarely taking the time to set a clear direction for where we want to go. This is where annual goals come into play. Setting clear, intentional goals for the year is more than just a productivity tool—it's a powerful strategy that can transform your life. This time next year, you want to look back and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Whether you’re a seasoned executive, an entrepreneur, one of my Cricket buddies or my classmate from high school or college, colleague, friend or someone looking to improve their personal life, annual goals act as a guiding star. In this article, I’ll break down why setting annual goals is crucial, how it focuses your energies, and how it can lead to a year of sustained growth and happiness.
First let’s address the reasons we don’t set goals: I often hear people say things like, “Setting goals isn’t for me,” or “I’m too busy to set goals.” Let’s address some of these common objections and clear up the confusion.
1. “It’s not for me.”?
This is a limiting belief. Goal-setting is for everyone. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about creating a roadmap for where you want to go. You don’t have to be an overachiever to set meaningful goals; you just need a vision of your future that you’re willing to work toward.
2. “I’m scared to set goals because I might fail.”?
Failure is a natural part of growth. The fear of failure can paralyze us, but it’s important to remember that failure is simply feedback. Each setback brings valuable lessons. The key is not avoiding failure but learning from it and using it to adjust your course.?
3. “I don’t know what to write.”?
This is a common concern, but the truth is, you already know what you want deep down. Start by asking yourself what matters most in your life or business. Focus on the things that excite you, challenge you, or align with your values. Your goals don’t have to be perfect; they just have to be meaningful.
4. “I believe in everyday improvements, so why set goals?”?
Everyday improvements are fantastic, but goals help to direct those improvements in a focused way. Small, consistent progress is great, but without goals, it’s easy to get off track. Goals give you a destination, and everyday improvements are the steps you take to get there.?
1. Setting Your North Star: Clarity of Vision
Think of your annual goals as your North Star. They provide a clear point of reference, something to guide you even when the path ahead seems unclear. Without a North Star, it’s easy to get lost in the noise of everyday distractions. Annual goals give you clarity, and this clarity is the foundation for everything that follows.?
The beauty of setting goals is that they force you to ask yourself the key question: What do I want to achieve this year? It’s easy to get caught up in the urgency of day-to-day tasks, but annual goals force you to zoom out and think about the bigger picture. They help you focus on what really matters and align your time, energy, and resources toward those priorities.
2. Focus Your Energies: Be On Purpose
Goal-setting isn’t just about dreaming big; it’s about focusing your energy on the right things. When you create specific, measurable goals for the year, you narrow your focus and begin to direct your time and effort toward what truly matters.?
The human mind is naturally drawn to seek fulfillment, but without focus, we end up spreading ourselves too thin. Annual goals allow you to focus your energies, helping you avoid distractions and keep your attention where it will yield the most significant results.
This focus is essential, particularly in today’s hyper-connected world, where distractions are constantly pulling us away from our purpose. By setting clear goals, you ensure that every action you take aligns with your broader objectives.
3. Synergy with the Law of Attraction

One of the most powerful aspects of setting annual goals is the synergy it creates with the Law of Attraction. When you are crystal clear about what you want to achieve, you begin to attract the opportunities, people, and resources needed to bring those goals to life.
Your energies will flow in the direction of your focus. ?The more you set your intentions on a particular goal, the more your mind starts to identify and align with circumstances that bring that goal closer to reality. It’s almost as if the universe conspires to help you, but only when you’re clear about what you want.
Law of Attraction isn’t magic—it’s about being purposeful in what you focus on. Once you have clarity, the opportunities begin to materialize around you. It’s happened to me multiple times, I hated it when I couldn’t quite explain why it works, now I understand better.
4. Progress = Happiness
I learnt from Tony Robbins, Progress = Happiness.
When you set goals and break them down into actionable steps, you create momentum. That momentum is what brings progress, and progress is what fuels happiness. It’s not the final achievement that creates joy, but the small wins along the way.
Annual goals give you a clear framework to measure progress. As you hit milestones and check things off your list, you’ll find that your sense of accomplishment grows, which, in turn, boosts your happiness.
It’s important to remember that progress is cumulative. Small, consistent steps lead to big results over time, and each step is a reason to celebrate. Even if you don’t reach the ultimate goal by the end of the year, you’ll still have made meaningful strides that contribute to your growth and happiness.
5. A Ladder to Growth: Scaling New Heights
Think of your annual goals as a ladder. Each goal is a step that you climb, pushing you to grow and expand in ways you may not have thought possible. Without goals, you’re left standing still, but with them, you have a clear path toward personal and professional development.
Annual goals allow you to scale new heights by challenging you to reach beyond your comfort zone. They help you grow in ways you may not have anticipated, and they reveal new opportunities that you might have otherwise missed. With each goal you achieve, you’ll find yourself more confident, capable, and ready for the next challenge.
This is why growth is often referred to as a "ladder." It’s an upward journey. Setting goals for the year means committing to that growth process, and while it may not always be easy, the rewards are well worth the effort.
6. Quadrant II Activities: Tackling What’s Important but Not Urgent
Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People introduces the idea of Quadrant II activities—those that are important but not urgent. I often cite this when I speak in public. ?These are the activities that contribute to long-term success, but which often get pushed aside in favor of more urgent, short-term tasks.
Annual goals help you to intentionally focus on these Quadrant II activities, such as personal development, relationship building, and strategic planning. In the whirlwind of daily life, it’s easy to focus on the urgent but not necessarily important. But when you set annual goals, you’re proactively making space for the activities that will move the needle in your life, even if they don’t have an immediate deadline.
Without goals, we end up reacting to external pressures, ticking off tasks without considering their long-term value. Setting annual goals ensures you’re making time for those Quadrant II activities that will lead to significant, lasting progress.?
My Final Thoughts: The Power of Annual Goals?
Setting annual goals isn’t just about accomplishing tasks—it’s about creating a life of purpose, focus, and growth. It’s about focusing your energy on what truly matters, attracting the right opportunities, and measuring progress in a way that brings happiness and fulfillment.
So, as you look ahead to the new year, don’t shy away from setting goals. Your North Star is waiting to guide you. The ladder of growth is there, step by step, ready for you to climb. The Law of Attraction is ready to work with you. All that’s needed is your decision to commit.
Here’s to a year of clarity, purpose, and intentional progress.
