The case for the 7 days work week!
Please read on before you decide to kill me ??
Folks have long argued for a reduction in the average weekly hours. Keynes suggested a 100 years ago that by now, we will all be working about 15 hours a week only. The French are famously down to 35 hours a week. Many 4 days a week experiments have been done, mostly successfully and some 3 day experiments too.
So why the $#$% should anyone consider a 7 days working week? Check out the following and let me know if you agree.
- It’s just weird to work 9-5, 5 days a week: Why does the entire world need to follow the same schedule of working - work for the same 5 days and then take 2 days off on the same days every week, week after week - it does not make sense! There is no logical reason for everyone in the world to work for 5 days and then take a break for 2 days. Everyone has a different need for rest and recuperation based on style of working, interest levels, phase of work / project, energy levels etc. Why can it not be 4 days work and 2 days break or 3 days work and 3 days break or for that matter, why can I not work for 21 days straight and then take 10 days off every month?
- No need for other people: For significant chunks of work (for most jobs) we don’t have the need to collaborate with other people at all times. Therefore working when others are not is easily doable. It is also possible to sync schedules with your work partners.
- In the zone: Sometimes, we are just in a ‘flow’ and things are going so well, we don’t want to stop - so why should we - just coz it’s Friday evening?
- Quiet time: Perhaps the most important reason of all - Working on days when there is relative ‘quiet’, allows us to focus on the thinking part of our jobs! (What if you do not have a thinking component in your job…oh well...)
- Better utilisation of resources : Public transport, cafe’s restaurants, theme parks, movie halls etc are packed at certain times of the week and are empty at others - This problem gets resolved and everyone gets to a better utilisation of capacity.
- Longer holidays are better: We feel so refreshed after a week long (or longer) holidays but feel like shit on Sunday evenings. So why not work 10 days straight and then take 4 days off - or work 20 days straight and then take 8 (or 16) days off?
7. Nothing to do on a weekend (gasp!): Sometimes (just sometimes) There is really nothing to do on a weekend!
So, as you would have guessed, I am not really arguing for a 7 days work week but I am suggesting that the world will be much better off if there was a lot more flexibility in schedules, if everyone was not on holiday at the same time on the same days of every week!
Can you think of more reasons for or against?
