CA(SA) - The Dilemma of New Moms Returning to Work After Extended Maternity Leave

Although I might not be that qualified to debate this topic, I have identified through my coaching work that returning to work after an extended maternity leave can be challenging if you are a new mom especially if you are in senior management. Here are some aspects that you might find supportive:

  • EMOTIONAL STRUGGLES: As a senior person you may feel guilt and anxiety about leaving your baby behind which could be further compounded by concerns over how your absence has impacted your boss and your team. Balancing leadership responsibilities with motherhood can be emotionally draining. Coping Strategy: Acknowledge and share your feelings with trusted colleagues or mentors. Connecting with other working moms in similar roles can provide much-needed support.
  • LOGISTICAL STRUGGLES: Balancing unpredictable work hours and high-stakes projects with the demands of parenting requires careful planning. Finding reliable childcare is essential to the process. Coping Strategy: Consider hiring a nanny or using daycare to ensure stable childcare. Do not expect your boss to be as compassionate to your needs as you might want.
  • IDENTITY SHIFT: Returning to work can create an identity clash because you are going to need to balance your roles as leader and caregiver. Navigating corporate culture while trying to maintain a work-life balance can feel overwhelming. Coping Strategy: Embrace both identities. Communicate openly with your boss about your needs, and redefine your personal and professional goals to align with your new reality. Again, don't expect too much empathy from your boss.
  • WORKPLACE PERCEPTIONS: You may find that your commitment or competence might be questioned after a maternity leave. Concerns about being viewed as "less dedicated" can create additional pressure. Coping Strategy: Be proactive. Engage with your boss openly and ensure that you display reconnection to your goals and vision, demonstrating your continued leadership and competence.

In conclusion, returning to work as a senior manager after maternity leave is no easy task. Embrace the dual roles and give yourself the grace to adjust. If you are feeling uncomfortable and disconnected know that this is perfectly normal. Be patient. It takes time to readjust!
