These CAs are making their mark across multiple industries

Welcome to the second monthly edition of Acuity Accounting Insights. This month, we’re taking a closer look at the chartered accountants who are using their accounting acumen to navigate tough times and help drive sustainable growth across multiple industries.

Putting CA skills to work in tourism

The tourism industry in Australia and New Zealand is bouncing back after the pandemic lockdowns, and revenues are almost back to pre-COVID levels. Haylee Preston CA in New Zealand and Jeff Ellison FCA in Australia both moved into the tourism sector full-time after working with tourism companies as accountants, and they both became chief executives.

Preston (CEO at Milford Sound Tourism) and Ellison (chairman of the Kelsian Group Limited and former SeaLink Marine & Tourism CEO) say their CA skills are invaluable in their executive roles, giving them ability to analyse performance, evaluate risk and allocate financial resources as part of a strategic business plan.

CAs help boost First Nations businesses

Just as Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are unique, so are the businesses owned and run by First Nations Australians, says Morgan Wilson CA, founder and director at creditte accountants & advisors Chartered Accountants and Advisors in Brisbane.

Indigenous business is never simply about making money, he says. Wilson was reminded of this when he volunteered to work with a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs earlier this year, in a program run by the Minderoo Foundation .

One participant was proud Wiradjuri Yinaa woman, Tara Croker , founder of Yaala Sparkling , a drinks business that infuses sparkling water with native Australian botanicals.

Acuity explores how Australian CAs have been acting as coaches and mentors to enhance the edge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander entrepreneurs.

Three CAs share their views on creating high-achieving multicultural teams

In Australia and New Zealand, where nearly 30% and 25% of the population respectively are born overseas, the workplace naturally becomes a melting pot of cultures. Some of this diversity stems from efforts to fill skill shortages, but it also brings a rich tapestry of ideas to the table.

How does having a team with varied cultural backgrounds impact creativity and innovation? And how can businesses harness this diversity to enhance their bottom line?

Kevin Wei CA, senior manager at 普华永道中国 and Hong Kong, Reina Banno CA, audit partner at Baker Tilly Staples Rodway , New Zealand, and Meena Shrestha CA , founder of WiseBooks Tax and Accounting, and former partner and director at KAS Accounting Solutions , Australia, share their insights on working within multicultural teams.
