The Cars of El Mirage.
A few months ago I took a trip to shoot a personal project in a place I have always wanted to go. El Mirage California.
El Mirage is a dry lakebed, a few hours outside Los Angeles, CA.
The Southern California Timing association set up a 1.3 Mile straight track back in 1937 on the lakebed and allowed people to race.
People from all over the US bring their cars to race this straight, in an attempt to get the highest speed on the weekend. Getting up to speeds of 200mph!
Most of the cars are modified originals, some of them as old as the Model T.
I know many people have photographed Bonneville, which is the same type of racing, but it looked to clean, and pristine, to me. I liked the idea of shooting on a dry lakebed, and I hoped for lots of dust to act as a natural smoke machine and make the cars look really cool.
I wasn’t disappointed! Add in a bit of Californian sunshine and it was a great trip!
