Carrying His Torch: Honoring My Father's Wisdom and Legacy
Today marks what would have been my father's 77th birthday, a day that holds significant meaning and reflection for me. As I contemplate this milestone, I am reminded of the profound impact my father had on my life and the enduring legacy he left behind. With each passing day, the absence of his physical presence serves as a poignant reminder of the void left in my heart, yet his memory continues to inspire and guide me in ways I never imagined.
When my father passed away, I found myself thrust into a whirlwind of grief and responsibilities. The immediate aftermath of arranging his funeral and bringing our family together left little time for mourning. It wasn't until later, as the dust settled, that I began to grasp the depth of his absence – the empty space where his laughter should have filled, the moments we should have shared but never will.
I vividly recall my father's dreams of retiring and relocating to Dallas, a dream that sadly remained unfulfilled. However, a decade ago, I had the opportunity to relocate my family to the Dallas area. Bursting with excitement, I reached for the phone to share the news with my father, only to be met with the harsh reality of his absence. The realization hit me like a ton of bricks, a stark reminder of his absence and the permanence of his loss.
My father's battle with prostate cancer was a painful journey for our family. By the time it was diagnosed, the cancer had already metastasized to his bones, leaving little hope for recovery. His experience taught me the importance of regular check-ups and early detection. I implore every young man to prioritize their health and undergo regular prostate exams – a simple step that could potentially save lives.
Despite his physical absence, my father's presence looms large in my life. His words of wisdom continue to resonate within me, guiding my actions and shaping my character. He often said, "Your name is your Business Card," reminding me of the importance of integrity and reputation. He taught me to embrace adversity as an opportunity for growth, saying, "Let your Adversity be your University." His unwavering belief in me fueled my confidence, as he would say, "I'll believe in you until you believe in you." And he instilled in me a sense of accountability, urging me to "talk about it or be about it." One phrase that particularly resonates with me is, "Opportunity is never lost, it only goes to the person who is best prepared."

These phrases, etched in my memory, serve as a beacon of light, guiding me through life's challenges and triumphs. I carry his legacy with me, passing on his wisdom to my own sons and to everyone I encounter. His spirit lives on through us, a testament to the enduring power of his words and the profound impact he had on my life.
As we commemorate my father's birthday, I urge everyone to prioritize their health and well-being. Don't let prostate cancer cut short your life's journey. Get checked regularly, not just for yourself, but for the loved ones who depend on you. You may be surprised to learn how many people need you, even those you may not realize.
In honoring my father's memory, I strive to live a life worthy of his legacy, guided by his timeless wisdom and unwavering love. Though he may no longer walk beside me, his spirit lives on in every choice I make and every life I touch. Today, and every day, I celebrate the indelible mark he left on my heart and soul.
Rest in peace, Dad. Your legacy lives on.
