The Carrington: A Masterpiece of Restoration and Modern Design
Bruce Wilson Architects
We are a group of energetic and considerate architects, based in Cape Town.
We take immense pride in our ability to blend the past with the present, and our work on The Carrington is a testament to this commitment. Originally built in the 1950s, The Carrington is a heritage building that we have meticulously restored, preserving its historic charm while infusing it with contemporary functionality.
The restoration of The Carrington presented unique challenges. As one of our lead architects noted, "We didn't have an accurate survey of the existing building. That obviously brought about challenges in the construction stage. By using our micro-apartment design expertise, we were able to quickly redesign units to suit the existing conditions. The client, as well as the buyers, were happy with the quick redesigns."
Balancing Heritage and Innovation
The design process began with a deep respect for the building's history. We aimed to retain the original facades, ensuring that the character and charm of the 1950s architecture were not lost. The exteriors were carefully restored, maintaining their historical aesthetics while integrating modern materials and techniques to enhance durability and sustainability.

Interior Restoration and Redesign
Inside, the restoration was both a challenge and an opportunity. Without a precise survey, our team had to be adaptive and innovative. The building's existing conditions required us to continuously rethink our approach. Leveraging our expertise in micro-apartment design, we developed flexible solutions that met the needs of modern living while respecting the building’s structural constraints.
Each apartment within The Carrington was designed to maximise space and functionality. The interiors feature a blend of vintage and contemporary elements, creating a harmonious balance that appeals to both heritage enthusiasts and modern urban dwellers. High ceilings, large windows, and carefully selected materials reflect the building's original era, while smart layouts and modern amenities ensure comfort and convenience.
Collaborative Success
Our collaboration with the client was crucial to the success of this project. Their openness to adaptive redesigns allowed us to implement quick and effective solutions that met their expectations and adhered to the building's historical significance. The result is a series of units that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional and comfortable.
The Carrington is more than just a building; it is a symbol of what can be achieved when heritage preservation meets innovative design. At Bruce Wilson Architects, we are proud to have brought this vision to life, creating a space where history and modernity coexist beautifully. The Carrington stands as a beacon of our dedication to excellence, adaptability, and respect for architectural heritage.
