Carrefour Unveils First Atacad?o Store In France

Carrefour has officially opened its first Atacad?o outlet in France, offering a “radically different” shopping experience for consumers, according to Carrefour chief executive Alexandre Bompard.

Commenting on LinkedIn, Bompard noted that the new 10,000-square-metre store, which opened on 20 June in Aulnay-sous-Bois, is an ‘unprecedented’ format in the French retail market and will source some 70% of its offering from French suppliers.

The store will offer some 20,000 SKUs as part of its selection, of which 25% will be private-label products.

The Atacad?o format, which combines elements of cash-and-carry and traditional retail, originated in Brazil, where it has become something of a retail phenomenon in the five years since its introduction. It has also been rolled out to Morocco.

Dutch retailer Albert Heijn has added a new Gen AI-based feature, Scan & Kook, to its app, as it seeks to use technology to reduce food waste and offer an improved customer experience.

The Scan & Kook feature suggests recipes based on images of ingredients that users share from their refrigerator or in store, the retailer added.

The feature was developed by Gen AI Labs – a start-up within Albert Heijn that was launched during its Food & Tech Week in 2023.

Sjoerd Holleman, director of strategy, products and analytics at Albert Heijn, said, “Within our company, we use Gen AI, which makes a positive contribution to the shopping experience of our customers and the job satisfaction of colleagues. We are working with our teams to further develop and implement this technology.”

The retailer is also working to improve the technology used in the feature, which converts the ingredients into personalised recipes.

Finnish retailer S Group will open a robot-assisted collection centre for online grocery shopping in Pirkanmaa in August 2024.

Robots will ensure more efficient and faster picking and help the company speed up order fulfilment.

The collection centre, spanning approximately 1,400 square metres, will serve approximately 280,000 inhabitants and cater to home delivery orders from online food stores in Tampere and Kangasala.

For shoppers opting for store pick-up from Kangasa, the retailer is offering a drive-in option at the new centre so that they don't have to get out of their cars.

Shoppers can also pick up their purchases from the take-out box built in the centre's yard, with round-the-clock contactless transactions.

Danish retail chain f?tex will open its first autonomous store in October of this year in Aarhus.

The Salling Group subsidiary added that the 24-hour f?tex GO store will debut a new camera technology in the Danish market.

Director of f?tex, Morten M?berg, commented, "The new unmanned store should be seen as a supplement to our other warehouses, which should give our customers a new and completely unique shopping experience, because we believe that the time is now ripe.

"We have chosen Aarhus as the first city because it is a big city with a customer group that fits the concept well, and because we have found an attractive location for the store. We believe that the technology and the extended opening hours will appeal to a great many customers who are missing the last thing in the fridge - also outside normal opening hours."

The purchasing habits of French consumers were ‘transformed’ last year, according to Kantar, adding that the effects of this shift are likely to continue to be felt in 2024.

According to Kantar, the start of this year has seen a continuation of the decline in grocery volume sales experienced last year, with volumes down by 3.0% in the first quarter thereof.

At the same time, spending has increased (by 2.2%), with the average price of products higher than it was in 2021, despite a stabilisation of inflation.

‘Thus, the French are emerging from this inflationary crisis with degraded purchasing power and reduced willingness to spend,’ noted Kantar.
