Carpentering a Green Future
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital city, has been making significant efforts to promote and implement Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. Recently, the Malaysian government has launched several initiatives to promote sustainability and address environmental issues. Community engagement is essential to raising awareness about environmental issues and educating people on how to make a difference. By bringing attention to climate change, pollution, and deforestation, communities can drive the conversation towards sustainability.
One such pioneer in bringing about this change is Harith Green Carpenter Ridzhuan, the founder of the Green Factory, fondly known as the Green Carpenter. Attending a webinar moderated by Major Dr. Prebagaran Jayaraman (R) , and the Green Carpenter, it was indeed an honour to understand the significance a company can make to bringing about a green revolution. Dr Pregabaran asked thoughtful questions such as the future of ESG and the importance of gauging community involvement in enhancing impact.?
Established in 2012, The Green Factory, endearingly called TGF, offers various eco-friendly products such as reusable bags, straws, utensils, and sustainable clothing options. The products are ethically sourced and environmentally friendly, focused on reducing waste and promoting sustainability. The founder Harith finished his studies in 2008, took charge and directed the company towards responsible manufacturing by making sustainability the central focus. Circularity is deeply embedded into the manufacturing process, where wood scraps are collected and crafted into innovative and utilitarian products such as mobile slates. They use only upcycled, certified and plantation wood to create awareness in their products about ethical sourcing. They also use sawdust and wood shavings for creating animal bedding and repurposing their offcuts into functional new items. Their social commitment is also depicted by their efforts to teach women and youth to participate in the Cottage Industry programmes. The Green Hamer outreach programs create a dialogue about sustainable living and digital knowledge sharing with the community. TGF has been holistic in generating revenue and profits and making a resilient effort towards protecting the environment using ESG principles.?
