Caring for Our Equine Companions: Donkeys and Horses in Kedarnath

The Plight of Donkeys and Horses

1. Challenges Faced

• Exhausting Journeys: The pilgrimage to Kedarnath involves an 18-kilometer trek from Gaurikund. For many pilgrims, this journey is physically demanding. Donkeys and horses play a crucial role in easing this burden by transporting goods and people.
• Inhumane Treatment: Unfortunately, some animals suffer mistreatment during the Yatra. Disturbing videos have surfaced, showing owners forcing innocent donkeys to inhale cigarette smoke through their nostrils. Such cruelty is unacceptable.

2. High Mortality Rates

• Overworked and Undernourished: Mules and horses face exhaustion due to heavy loads and inadequate nutrition. In just twenty days, sixty mules lost their lives enroute to Kedarnath.
• Lack of Proper Care: These animals endure harsh conditions without proper medical attention or rest.

Our Donkey Seva Initiative

Inspired by global organizations like the Donkey Sanctuary and Brooke, we’ve taken our first step to alleviate the suffering of equines in India. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
