CaribbeanTales International Film Festival Presents Trinidad Night | Women Filmmakers Dominate 2019 CTFF Trinidad Night
Toronto, ON- CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF) presents Trinidad Night on September 14, 2019, at the Royal Cinema, 608 College Street, Toronto. CTFF Trinidad Night will screen the feature-length film, Moving Parts, directed by Emilie Upzack, as well as the short films, Three Minutes, directed by Juliette McCawley and March of the Mokos, directed by Kim Johnson.
This year, all the filmmakers presented on CTFF Trinidad Night are women. The CaribbeanTales Team purposely supports women filmmakers and continues to show the world that women filmmakers' stories and perspectives have value and deserve the world stage. Frances-Anne Solomon, CEO, CTFF is also of Trinidadian heritage. And her vision and passion shine through in every detail of planning for and presenting, the CaribbeanTales International Film Festival.
The feature-length film, Moving Parts, shares a unique perspective on the Caribbean Diaspora with an Asian cast. Zhenzhen, an illegal Chinese immigrant has been smuggled into Trinidad and Tobago to be with her brother after her father's death Only then does she discover the true cost of her arrival. Moving Parts is a sober drama about the realities of immigration and human trafficking. "I am pleased that Moving Parts will screen in Toronto as several actors and crew who helped to realize this project are Canadian. I am also pleased about the CTFF screening because I have observed that the film resonates with our Caribbean Diasporic audiences," says Emilie.
The short film, Three Minutes, is about a couple who get more than they bargained for while awaiting the results of a pregnancy test. This short film was shot in one day, with a crew of four people and a budget of twenty dollars (Canadian). The timer, as they wait for the pregnancy test in the film, is a ticking time bomb to their relationship. "I am excited and honoured to be able to share my film at the CaribbeanTales International Film Festival. It is such an important festival that allows Caribbean filmmakers to share their stories and reach new audiences" says, director Juliette McCawley.
The short film March of the Mokos is about an old African ritual that has found expression in Trinidad's traditional Carnival. Inspired by the most famous celebration in the Caribbean, this twenty-four-minute short film displays Carnival in a historic yet captivating manner. Kim Johnson, Director: March of the Mokos, says "I'm more excited for my film to be included in CaribbeanTales than any other film festival; because it’s only through a unified platform that our small islands are able to build a viable film industry."
CTFF Trinidad Night highlights three perspectives of the island of Trinidad and Tobago, from three different filmmakers, branding CTFF Trinidad Night as one of the most anticipated nights of the Film Festival.
