Cargo Shipping Case Study (SaaS) — Shiply
Shiply’s goal is to transport goods or products from one place to another, typically over long distances, using various modes of transportation such as ships, planes, trains, and trucks, depending on the nature and volume of the cargo.
There are three types of users who can interact with Shiply: shippers, brokers, and administrators. Shippers are the companies or individuals responsible for shipping the cargo, brokers are intermediaries who help match shippers with carriers and negotiate rates on behalf of their clients, and administrators are the individuals or teams responsible for managing the cargo shipment product, including overseeing its development, deployment, and ongoing support.
Challenges:
In order to design an effective admin interface for Shiply, it is essential to consider several important challenges. Firstly, a clear information architecture, navigation, and layout must be defined. Secondly, mapping the content and visualizing data related to cargo shipments is a key challenge, which might include tracking information, delivery times, inventory levels, and other important metrics. Finally, ensuring that the admin interface is user-friendly for completing tasks, such as creating single or bulk shipments, tracking shipments, and managing different clients, is crucial for a seamless user experience.
Design Process
The process of defining solutions for the challenges involves studying the needs of the users, industry standards, and best practices, as well as analyzing the data related to shipments.
Information Architecture
Grid System
To maintain standard guidelines and organize content effectively, we followed a 12-column grid system that can be easily broken down into 2, 3, or 4 parts based on context requirements. Our guidelines included a 40px margin and 24px gutter spacing.
UI Component
We created several components for Shiply to enhance the user experience and improve the functionality of the platform. These included navigation, profile section, tables, tracking features, and various types of cards. Each component was designed with the user in mind to ensure ease of use and efficient navigation.
Hi-Fidelity Wireframe
Wireframes were a crucial part of the design process for Shiply, allowing for the visualization and planning of the platform’s layout and functionality. Through wireframes, we were able to explore different design options and make informed decisions about the final product.
Visual Design — Dashboard
Where we display a summary of the product’s shipment statistics, in-progress data, and tracking maps, to allow for easy access and at a glance insights. From this page, the admin can make actions through different navigational options that are conveniently placed for quick access throughout the application.

Shipping Page
The Shipping page is a central hub for managing all incoming orders and tracking their shipping status. Users can view and track orders that have been created, labeled, shipped, cancelled, require action, or are awaiting pickup. This page provides an at-a-glance view of the entire shipping process and allows to quickly identify orders that need attention. Users can efficiently manage their shipping workflow and keep customers informed about the status of their orders.
Create Shipment
Creating a new shipment involves gathering and organizing important information about the seller, customer, items being shipped, and shipping details. This includes the seller and customer’s contact information, as well as details about the items being shipped such as weight, dimensions, and quantity. Additionally, the shipment method must be selected and any necessary shipping information provided such as the shipping carrier, tracking number, and estimated delivery date. Properly recording and organizing this information is crucial to ensure a successful and efficient shipment process.
