Carer's in the Workplace FAQ's
Kaddy Thomas
Founder / Director at Elijah's Hope CIC and Carers Collective. Helping unpaid carers to boost their wellbeing, ease their isolation and to become empowered.
In case you've missed it, we've got a brand new 6 week programme launching in just 10 days.
Aimed at employees who are struggling to balance their caring role with paid employment, this course is designed to help them understand stress, learn how the brain reacts to it, and give practical ways to manage it.
When the source of stress isn't going to go away, the only thing you can do is learn to cope with it more effectively.
The course is run over 6 weekly sessions that are each 90 minutes long. That's just under 4% of an average (40hrs) working week. There may be some 'homework' such as mindfulness exercises, but this can, and should, be fitted in around normal day-to-day life.
Stressed employees tend to be less productive. Stress, and not knowing how to manage it, can impair memory and creativity, make concentrating more difficult, and make it harder to concentrate.
Stress can also cause irritability and mood swings, as well as increased feelings of isolation, which means it could negatively affect relationships between team members.
There's also the fact that increased stress levels can lead to increased absences from work, either from the stress itself impacting your employee's mental health and their ability to cope, or from the impact it can have on the immune system meaning they're more susceptible to bugs and viruses.
Reducing all this, for just £325, probably sounds like a pretty good deal now, doesn't it?
Every carer is different. Their situation, the person they're caring for, the amount of help they get - no two carers' situations are the same.
Being a parent carer myself, I know what worked for me, and I've spoken to enough parent carers to know that being able to manage stress more effectively will transform the lives of a huge amount of carers.
Our stress isn't going away - we're still going to need to advocate for our child when we're exhausted, manage care teams, pick up the slack, run a home, do the food shop, work, do late-night A&E visits, remember the exact medication dosage as well as when to give each one...
My point is, I know because I've been there. I've been a parent carer for 18 years and counting.
The course is being delivered by Dawn Ibbetson of Inspired to Change, on behalf of Carer's Collective.
Dawn is a qualified clinical hypnotherapist who combines her knowledge of the inner workings of the corporate world with her understanding of how the brain works. She focuses on delivering training that will help increase resilience and mental well-being, and understand how to manage stress.
