Carers’ Awareness Week

Carers’ Awareness Week

Spotlight on:?The Film and TV Carers’ Club?

From inflexible workplaces and the lack of support processes within companies, to the impact of freelancing with periods without work and unpredictable schedules, carers in the film and TV industry face unique challenges and demands. The industry can also be a very lonely place, so finding support from others who are going through similar experiences can help to combat the isolation and loneliness that caring can bring.?

You can find this kind of support from our friends at Film & TV Carer's Club who offer peer support meetings on the last Monday of each month between 6 and 7pm (excluding Bank Holidays), offering a safe space for carers to share their experiences, receive personalised support, and connect with others who understand their unique challenges. They focus on recognising and celebrating carers' strengths and resilience, which helps to build self-esteem and reinforces a sense of belonging within the industry.

Their Zoom meet-ups can be accessed by signing up to their newsletter, or joining their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/458188592112708/?

"The Film & TV Carer's Club has offered a safe space?for me, alongside people who understand the?nature of our industry AND what it's like to have caring responsibilities. I'm a carer to my 9-year-old son who has high support needs. I'm passionate about inclusion and accessibility in the industry, and advocate for shorter working hours. It has been wonderful to chat my ideas through with the group and to have the support of those who 'get it'.” Sarah Leigh, writer-director, Inclusivity Films?

The Film & TV Carer's Club’s website also offers useful advice and signposting around issues facing carers such as finances, your rights, employment law and much more.?? One common concern faced by carers is the dilemma around disclosing their carer status at work, as the stigma around being a carer may lead to fear of being seen as unreliable. This often leads to carers suffering in silence, impacting their mental health and career prospects. If you’re thinking about disclosure do read their dilemma?blog: https://www.filmtvcarersclub.org/blog/the-disclosure-dilemma?

They also work with industry employers to raise awareness about unpaid carers, helping them recognise the value of retaining these skilled workers and assisting in creating supportive work environments and policies.?
