Careful Selection
We’d like to extend our congratulations to the four Exeter Chiefs players who have been selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa this summer. With the thirty-seven man squad being drawn from across Scotland, Wales, Ireland and England, it is fantastic to see that more than 10% come from Exeter’s own Premiership rugby team. As rugby fans we’ll be following the progress of Luke Cowan-Dickie, Jonny Hill, Sam Simmonds, and Stuart Hogg as well as the rest of the players with interest when the tour gets underway.
The availability of such a wide pool of talent enabled head coach Warren Gatland to select the best players for each position. And that takes knowledge of every player’s strengths and weaknesses as well as an understanding of what each individual can bring to the team. As he commented in announcing the squad “Over the course of the last three weeks the coaches and I have rigorously debated each position. We saw some outstanding performances in the recent Six Nations, so competition for places has been tough with some incredibly tight calls to make.”
We can relate to that debate as it is similar to the process we follow when advising on investment mixes for our clients. Concentrate all investments in one area and there is no cover elsewhere. And whilst some funds may on the surface look reasonable, it is only through knowledge of underlying factors that we can make a balanced judgement.
