Ways to produce hydrogen water

I know of two methods of producing hydrogen water for "home use". On the one hand, there are "hydrogen sticks" or tablets to dissolve. Both release hydrogen when you add them to water. They usually contain magnesium, in which the hydrogen was previously bound.

The other, classic method of enriching water with H2 is electrolysis. It works quite simply. All you need is an electrolysis device with a power supply. Today I will briefly explain the process and what can go well or badly with it.

The electrolysis process

The electrolysis process is as elegant as it is effective. There are two electrodes in a bottle filled with water. These electrodes release a current impulse that splits the water into its components - oxygen and hydrogen. The molecular hydrogen (H2) that is produced penetrates through a membrane into the water. There it is dissolved in the water and can be easily absorbed by your body.

The membrane retains the excess oxygen - and other undesirable substances if present - and removes them to the outside. They are simply released into the air.

Undesirable effects

Unfortunately, many of the solutions available to date have more than just a few technical shortcomings. It is more the case that they can also cause damage with their undesirable side effects.

??? - Some devices change the pH value of the water due to excessive electrical voltage. Ideally, however, it should be around 7 or just below and should stay that way.

??? - Others cannot get to grips with the fact that by-products of electrolysis, such as chlorine and ozone, are too highly concentrated and then remain in the water even though we should not consume them. This is usually due to the poor quality of the membrane. It has to be extremely fine to filter out everything and should only allow hydrogen to pass through.

??? - Due to inferior materials, metal leaching occurs at the electrodes of some devices or particles of the membrane are washed out so that they get into the water.

??? - Even the detachment of particles from the plastic container is not uncommon.

Optimizing the process

When I took a closer look at this and looked at Nuno Nina's results, I realized what was needed: for the electrolysis process to be clean, safe and effective, you need high-quality electrodes and membranes as well as a suitable voltage. Then you have no unwanted by-products and no metal leaching.
