Career Transitions: why they are so hard, and how you can make yours easier

Career Transitions: why they are so hard, and how you can make yours easier

If rethinking your career and searching for a new job is something you haven’t done in the past 5 or 10 years, it’s totally normal that you feel lost about it.

When you need to transform your professional situation, it can feel overwhelming to decide where to start.

What is relevant in the process? How can you also be realistic about the possibilities that are doable to you. Nobody taught us how to do it, right?

In my own professional journey, I have also struggled with career transitions in the past.

There were moments when I knew I needed a change, but I didn’t have clear yet what the next step would look like for me. It was hard to picture a path to follow if I was not yet able to visualize it.

It might look like I always had everything clear and easy in my own career… but this is far away from the truth!

I see similar things happening very often with my career coaching clients:

??Some of them want to make a move for a better work opportunity, but they don’t know what is available out there.

??Others have already paid professional resume writers to update their CVs, but they are still unsure about what jobs to apply for.

??They feel stagnant in their current jobs, but also afraid to leave their comfort zone and the benefits (especially the financial ones) that they have now.

??Their confidence level starts to decrease, because after months of not achieving the results they want, they start doubting if they should still consider a career move or just settle for what they already have.

Feeling lost during a career switch is common, but don't let it hold you back.

When you take small steps forward, even if still feeling unsure, you will get closer to reaching your goals.

Let me share three ideas that might help you in your career transition:

Non-linear career path

Remember that idea that you should decide the profession you wanted to have when you were 18 years old, and stick to it until you retire? This is not true anymore – at least not to everyone. Studies show that people will change jobs at least 5 times during their work life, so starting again, learning new things and making different choices are part of the (new) game.

Bridge jobs and long term plans

Probably not all the jobs you will have in your career will be your dream job – and that is fine. If you have a long term career strategy, you can have jobs that are not “the ones” yet, but they will bring you closer to the next job you want to have – because you can learn new skills and gain experience related to your next career move. So instead of considering them a waste of time, think about them as an extra step to take you in the right direction.

This is a definition I’ve found online for bridge jobs:

By definition, a “bridge job” is a temporary position. Most often, it's something you do while you're transitioning from one job to the next.?

Listening to others is not always the solution

Just because your friends say that you have a great job, it doesn’t make your dissatisfaction disappear. What makes you happy and motivated in your career can be completely different from what motivates others around you. Also, our own priorities can change along our career, so a job that was great for you 5 years ago might not fit your needs anymore.
