Career Transition Success - Jane.

Jane wakes up every day, makes breakfast, has a shower and makes her way into work.

Sometimes there’s a little bit of traffic on the bypass, but she doesn’t mind.

She gets to work, makes a coffee and chats to her colleagues about things that have been going on.

She laughs and smiles at everyone she passes and always has time for people.

There are days when the workload is a little higher than others, but she relishes the challenge and never complains about it.

Some days she’s so busy that the end of the day comes around so quickly and she wonders where the time has gone. She really feels like she’s made a difference and, even though things are a bit stressful at work at the moment, she’s happy.

She’s had a busy day but nothing she can’t handle and nothing that gives her that knot in her stomach like she used to get in her old job.

In her old job, she constantly felt sick. She would sometimes hide in the toilet cubicle because she couldn’t face it.

Her boss constantly belittled her and put her in awkward situations where she felt out of her depth – it was “a development opportunity” he would say, but it never felt like development to her.

She was constantly snowed under and never had time to get anything done. She never had that sense of achievement, that she craved so much.

Everyone felt the same and there was never any friendly banter in the kitchen, just moaning and backstabbing.

She’d worked there for a while and was really afraid that she would be making a big mistake by leaving but she just couldn’t take it anymore.

That’s when she contacted me for career coaching and after our initial telephone chat, she opened up about everything that had been going on and what she wanted from her career.

Having a sense of the direction she wanted to go in, I was able to help her to identify what was important to her in her career and what she was not prepared to put up with again. This led her to realise that she wanted to feel a sense of meaning within her career and to know that she was making a real difference to people’s lives. This coupled with some practical sessions around updating her CV and perfecting her interview skills, she was able to apply for roles that appealed to her and finally found a great job working for a charitable organisation helping people who needed advocacy support. It was quite a departure from her former career but she's really happy and motivated to help the people that she works with.

If you feel how Jane felt, then you know how hard it is to carry on burying your feelings and not addressing what’s going on. Being unhappy at work and working in a toxic environment can really take its toll on your health and well-being. If you’re ready to make a change, get in touch.
