CAREER TRANSITION: DECODED
All of us desire job satisfaction in the work we do. Research by Rightmanagement.com (Manpower Group) in Australia shows that 20% of people are caught in the wrong jobs. They always wish that they do something which they can enjoy. There are reasons why in most cases one is not able to do so as the route to navigate in this market and find something of interest while having experience in some other domain or field is often very difficult and unclear. Having coached professionals in different domains to transition their careers I have captured the key steps you can follow to achieve your goal of career transition. All the points are thought through and are the outcome of observing career transitions made by people whom I have assisted.
Why you need a change – Before you even think and start planning about career transition it is important to understand what you need. Pull your horses if you are looking to get into an easier job with easy money because there is no easy job in this world. But if you are looking for a job which you’ll enjoy then you have a reason to start this quest. There can be 2 instances –
1) You know what role you want to get into and why (there must be activities involved in that role that excites you and gives you a way to fulfill some purpose in your life)
2) Identify skills & traits - You are not aware of what you want but you are sure you want to do something different that you’ll enjoy doing.?In such a case you can take some tests available online to identify your key skills/Interests. Some of these tests are:
·???????Career Quiz from The Princeton Review
·???????MBTI Personality Test
·???????OptimistMinds personality test
·???????Career test by 123test.com
·???????Career assessment by career explorer.com
·???????Interest assessment and value matcher by careeronestop.org
·???????Career assessment by profile.keirsey.com

Also, you can self-reflect by thinking about which part of your role you like the most or think about all the roles you know exist around you, speak with more people who do different jobs, and understand what they do. Spend time to understand them and then decide on the role(s) which sounds interesting to you and you can relate a passion, interest, or hobby of yours with that role.
What do you want, what is available in the market – After completing the activity mentioned above, list down the skills that come naturally to you or your interests which you want to utilize in your next job. Start looking for jobs that need these skills or traits, understand them in detail, and try to connect with people who do this job currently to know more about how their daily life looks like in that job. While you do this also keep an eye on how many jobs are there in the market for such skills & traits, more the number of jobs the more possibilities you land on one.
Calculate the risks involved – As part of this quest before taking the final leap, calculate the risks involved. Having spoken with professionals currently doing a such job will give you an understanding of how likely you are to build a flourishing career in a role you have identified as part of this search. Talk about the challenges, daily tasks, growth prospects, and possibilities to return to the same job. You can list down all risks and rate them as per the information you have collected and how severe it is as per your perception and also the data available. Calculation of risk can be fact-driven and also perception driven as no one would know how well you can cope with a challenge especially when it relates to your interest and skills which come naturally to you.
Cross skill - ?Enroll yourself in online or offline certification or non-certification courses that will give you essential / supportive skills for the transition role.
Rework on cv – Next crucial step is to rework your cv and market it. Relate with your target role’s skills & traits and rephrase, highlight the responsibilities which showcase these skills & traits. These responsibilities would be in a way transferrable skills from your current role to your new role.?Post the revised cv on job sites with a headline of what types of roles are you interested in or mention the key skills of your target role in headline. Example: If you have managed a team then you can mention you have done employee engagement of your team, performance management, training & Development given they were part of your responsibilities. If you are a Key account manager for sales, you can mention that you ensured product adoption, client retention and customer satisfaction. You might be already doing these activities as part of your role but might not be aware of the terms.
Engage/Network with relevant people/career counselors (webinar, write, network, apply) – This step is one of the most important ones. Connect with people who are performing similar roles as your target role. Understanding more about what they do helps you identify how else can you relate your current role to the target role. Please do not assume that current and target roles don’t have any relatability and instead connect with people to understand and establish that relationship between the 2 roles. Write articles, and blogs on the aspects covered in your new role to catch the attention of professionals. Keep applying for your target roles on different job sites and ask people to refer you. Most people would not agree to refer because either they do not have time, access, interest, or knowledge about what you have asked for but some will hence keep trying.?
Stay positive – Throughout this quest, you need to stay positive, believe in the purpose of the efforts made, and never self-doubt that you cannot do it. By doing this you become self-confident which exudes from your speech, and behavior and would act as a catalyst to get you shortlisted in interviews.
