Career Stories: Stephanie Varns, CMT

How long have you been with Steritech?

I started in January 2020. I was a Specialist up until December 2021, when I then took on the role of Certified Master Trainer (CMT) alternate. I became a full-time CMT in March 2022.

How do you create motivation for yourself and for your team?

I always focus on the positives! If something doesn’t go as planned, focus on what went right. Don’t worry about making mistakes. Make them and then learn from them. You can always end the day better than you started.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

When I travel, I make sure to take time before or after training (or assessments) to explore the city I’m in. It gives me a chance to unwind and see what the world has to offer. Once I’m home and my work is finished, I am off the clock and I spend my time with my family and friends.

Is there someone that you professionally admire?

It’s hard to narrow it down to just one person. Everyone I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with has left a lasting impression. We all take on our fair share of work and how we handle that on top of our day-to-day lives while consistently volunteering to help and still staying compassionate is always admirable.

What was the moment you knew you’d made the right decision to work here?

I knew after my first few interviews, and I knew 100% after training. The communication, patience, and support everyone gave calmed my anxiety and they worked with me until I felt confident and comfortable in my abilities. I never felt alone and was never ashamed to ask for help. Everyone was and still is, happy to help. And you get to travel!

What advice do you have to give to someone that wants to explore this career path?

The CMT career path takes patience, dedication, and time management skills. You also need to consider you’ll have at least 50% travel out of the month. It is rewarding in and of itself by being able to teach and get to know our future specialists. It is very rewarding and it makes all the difference. It’s amazing seeing the “once nervous” specialist build their skill and confidence while growing within the company and by taking on new clients and new responsibilities.
