Career Shift @ Age of 45+


Hiring Scenario for Sr Level professionals hopefully shall pick-up now in domains like - IT, Consumption, Infra in India.

Luckily Sr level professonals working with strong brands do not face much problems to get next role, there's equally best talent available with smaller & less known branded companies who unfortunately do not get to work with so called big brands or those who tries their hands in entrepreneurship, they have to go through tough times to find next better role.

Sincere appeal to our friends in talent acquisition to be considerate & give such talent a chance to present their skills instead of rejecting their profiles without meeting them just because there is no strong brand in their CV or they had failed entrepreneurship.

In fact there are several reasons for a professional's failure in career or his entrepreneur which is not necessarily means that he/she is poor professional. In fact he gives his best there. Imagine someone failing in his venture due to tech disruption or lack of funding or adverse economic situation, change in regulations etc which we experience frequently now. Many successful business leaders had faced failures - Great Scientists, Founders of ALIBABA, KFC & many other home grown organisations. Entrerepeneurship Failure teaches us more than success as it makes us more humble & grounded hence shall be consider positively

Also those work with small or less known brands or as self-employed get more 360 Degree exposure across all the aspects of business compared to professionals working at big brands.

I recently met a Professional who has rich 22+ years exp. Engineering Grad with strong academic records. Rich Technology project sales experience & equally rich understanding of industry, An excellent communicator, Team Leader & an Optimist.

He is 45+ & search a job post a partly successful entrepreneurship stint of a decade in Technology Solutions where he handled Sales, Project Execution & Business Operations, before which he worked for small brands. He shared his heart-breaking exp.:

  • Wherever he approaches everyone look for brands he worked with & reasons for moving from entrepreneurship to job
  • The Talent Acquisition Managers show less courtesies if he contact them, many of whom are in their early thirties but lack listening skills & patience
  • He had few telecons & meetings but failed to even get post meeting updates
  • He has to justify to every prospective employer the reason why he is moving away from his entrepreneurship
  • He rarely got a chance to explain how well is he fit for the role & how he plans to handle it
  • He is doing it for last 2+ years with very little success
  • The level of professionalism is below expectations for job-seekers of his age
  • He continued by keeping his optimism high & still hopeful to get his much needed break

So I would appeal to all Hiring Managers to -

Give such talent a right change to display their abilities & skills who could be very good fit for Leading Teams, Business Operations & Managing Front end Sales in respective domains.

Their best soft-skills will be an asset - Time Management, Strong Work Ethics, Problem Solving, Leadership, Team Leading

Their Industry & domain experience surely carries rich value which will be an asset for the organisation

They will be highly committed & will ensure best RoI for their employers

Though we are in Digital world we need to have Human touch in the hiring approach & shall meet person to evaluate him/her rather than doing CV level rejects if the basic competencies are matching

Talent Acquisition shall be looked beyond just hiring - Its a Social Profession to help much needy job-seekers, give them chance & be very kind with them!

Talent Managers are brand ambassadors for their organisations & shall live up to it. Many of them are highly professional & hope to see the rest to improve with better response to job-seekers

I am sure we need to treat Job Seekers & specially Sr level professionals respectfully. Let's Just Make them happy & add joy in their job-search! It cost nothing except few minutes of our time. Pls talk politely, reply to mails.
