The sales industry is notorious for its bad reputation, leading many graduates to avoid a career in this sector.
Whether it’s the never-ending cold-calls or repetitious door-to-door selling, many graduates have chosen not to pursue a career in the industry prior to even leaving university.
It is an unfortunate fact but many consumers have at some time in their lives experienced a bad sell or ‘forceful’ or an ‘egotistical’ salesperson. These experiences all collectively fuel an ugly image of the stereotypical salesperson, which leaves an over exaggerated version front of mind.
In truth, the sales industry has great potential for graduates wanting to establish themselves and progress quickly. With attractive salaries, fantastic commission structures and a long list of desirable perks, beginning a career in sales has endless possibilities.
So, where has this negative perception of the sales profession come from? With sales myths spreading so prominently, it is not unexpected that many graduates have a narrow-minded opinion of the industry.

10 年Good read. It's definitely not easy and particularly in a new business focussed role the demands can be high, hours long and pressure plentiful - but the successful people are typically rewarded well.

10 年Good article that. Once I got my MEng the desktop engineers asked when I was going to get a "real engineering" job. Little do they know sales is a fun, highly rewarding and a well paid place to be. Wouldn't swap it for being in the same office every day, doing the same boring tasks and not enjoying my "work".
