Consider this, many people may not start out thinking of making a career in retail, but for those who do, the rewards can be big. First, it is important to find the right retailer. Not all are alike. When you find the one that might be right for you, look for one where you and its customers are treated like family, and where you get to be in the driver's seat of your career. You may spend more time with your retail family than the one at home so choose wisely.
There are more jobs in retail than one might first imagine. Of course, there are those on the front line: cashiers, customer sales associates, merchandisers, and stockers to name just a few. These and other roles make the other functions in a retail store possible like team leaders, assistant & store managers, loss prevention, selling floor specialists, merchandising, scheduling/administration, receiving & delivery, operations, etc. Like in manufacturing, the Corporate functions exist because the people manufacturing the product in the plants exist - so is the raison d'être for Corporate in retail - it's the people who work as hard as they do in the stores, in the field, or behind the scenes to source the product on-line for their customers that make it all possible. Corporate office & store support functions may include: finance, administration, human resources, legal, supply chain & distribution, IT/systems, business development, sales & marketing, among others.
So, it may be a surprise that one can look both in a retail Store or in the Corporate retail environment for a job that fits one's experience/education and availability -- with full-time, part-time and seasonal jobs often being an option. Across the retail landscape, retailers are almost always looking for entry-level as well as experienced talent. And, now with the emergence of Work-from-Home (WFH) or hybrid work models across many industry sectors due to the pandemic, even retail has some jobs that make this flexible work arrangement possible.
What about the rewards? The best retailers serve customers, the community & shareholders. When they do this well, customers have great shopping experiences, the community perceives value from having the retailer in the marketplace, and shareholders can earn financial dividends. In return, retailers demonstrate their appreciation for their associates' service through schedules they can plan their life around, comprehensive pay & benefit programs like health benefits, stock discount programs, retirement plan contributions, and more. Also, some retailers even treat their community like family and perform community outreach based on the needs locally.
Need a job, or are you really looking for the next step to grow in your career? Would you consider making a career in retail, it is not for everyone, but the answer may have now changed to, ...yes! Start your research, and find the right retailer and right Store or Corporate level job that fits your skills & expertise the best. A career in retail? Let's take a look, and get to work.
