This article is a reference site of career links. It contains the following topics (so far): SELLING YOURSELF (LinkedIn), JOB HUNTING, COVER LETTERS, RESUMES, NO EXPERIENCE, INTERVIEWS, and OFFERS.
I add great links and content when I find them OR YOU ASK ME! Please check back when needed and give suggestions in the comments! My hope with this blog-style post is to pay it forward.
SELLING YOURSELF
In the business world, HR and hiring managers will check you out on LinkedIn. Before you go further into this, make sure you are an All-Star with a full profile, per the following:
...The main reason to complete your Profile is to ensure that you will appear in LinkedIn search results. "If you don’t have a 100% complete Profile... you will be INVISIBLE when searched, game over."
Here's another great list of 20 quick, actions you should take. It even includes a 2-page download of the 20 Point Check List for an Awesome LinkedIn Profile...
If you don't have a GREAT LinkedIn Headline, Summary and complete profile, STOP everything else and do that NOW!
You might consider moving the Summary section to the top and using it as a place for your Perfect Elevator Pitch To Land A Job - 30 seconds of speech content that summarizes what value you offer and/or a little about your story - basically, why you’d be a great candidate.
For an example, see my LinkedIn Headline and Profile - and the following post:
The following came from the previous post:
Once you have a great LinkedIn profile and Summary as a hook to your resume, keep building and maintaining your network of connections!
Keep in mind with both your profile and resume, you have only six seconds to hook someone on your value to them...
JOB HUNTING
Maintaining your career takes a lifetime of smart work, not just hard work...
Ever notice that you can spend a lot of time filling out job applications, listing references and basically doing whatever a potential company wants you to do - only never to hear back from them? Here's something to try...
"If you fill out an online job application, you’re likely to invest an hour STAY a half to two hours on that process and never hear a peep from the employer organization." - Liz Ryan
This tip is huge. Most resumes and applications go right to the HR floor trash. Even better, skip HR altogether...
...In short, you can skip HR and the application process and instead search for the hiring manager using LinkedIn, the company's site or Google.
COVER LETTERS
The purpose of a cover letter used to be to tell your custom story (get noticed) and to get an interest in reading your resume. Some HR experts would argue there is no need for this anymore, especially if you use a Pain Letter or LinkedIn instead...
If you insist (or are required for an Applicant Tracking System :() , here is some traditional cover letter help...
Perhaps if all else fails, you can copy and paste most of the Summary section of your LinkedIn profile.
RESUMES
Make sure you saw the following post (from above) and understand it's importance: Why That Perfect Job Lasts Six Seconds.
If you want traditional resume help, see the following...
Now for the fun stuff. Forget about the traditional, boring resume!
- "You can sound like yourself in your resume and in your LinkedIn profile.
- The new professional tone is a human voice.
- Somewhere along the line we started to treat resumes as quasi-legal documents, when in fact they’re branding materials, and awfully personal ones at that. There are seven billion people on the planet. The last thing we want to do is to sound like everyone else."-Liz Ryan
- "It’s in you... It’s all over you... You can sound like yourself in your resume and in your LinkedIn profile." -Liz Ryan
- "...start with the problem (show the reader why)... what you did... close out the Dragon-Slaying Story by explaining the impact" -Liz Rya
"How do you write a Human-Voiced Resume, or revise your current resume to put a human voice in it? Follow these ten steps..."
-Liz Ryan
Create Your Basic Career History:
- Pick a Career Direction
- Write Your Human-Voiced Resume Summary
- Frame Your Past Jobs
- Share Your Dragon-Slaying Stories
- How Far Back to Go?
- Keep Storytelling in Mind
- Get The Jargon Out
- Show us, don’t tell us!
- Add Your Education
NO EXPERIENCE
In general, if you are doing the above steps, using a Human Voice to tell your story and what pain you can solve with your added value, you should be fine even without experience. For more, here's a post on how to deal with it...
INTERVIEWS
I am looking for really good references on interviews. For me, it comes down to doing your homework on the company enough that you have several good questions to ask... And don't forget it's a two-way street! Also, DO the job in the interview is one of the best tips I ever saw.
OFFERS
Congratulations! If you've made it this far, YOU HAVE NO PROBLEMS ;)
