We cannot dismiss the fact that, in some cases the salary and benefits could be a major factor when people are making career choices. For some it could be job security, work-life balance, prestige, opportunities for career growth and demands and requirements of the job. Ultimately, people's career choices will depend on the individual and their unique goals and values. In this article, I take you through the importance of choosing a career path that is fulfilling and the benefits of it.
My journey to choosing a rewarding career:
We all have several motivations for our various career choices. My motivation to become a Chartered Accountant increased in grade 4 when it looked "cool" to hear my parents say, ?t's busy season" and of course, "the money." When I started studying towards my degree, I realised how much I actually enjoyed not only the modules I was taking (well, except management accounting which I was good at), but I enjoyed how the journey kept me on my toes. I learnt to think outside the box, I learnt to be initiative and the versatility that comes with the qualification was even more exciting.
When I qualified and started working, I enjoyed the fact that there are a lot of opportunities for continuing education and professional development which has helped in my career advancement. As someone who believes in continuous growth and learning, my career has enabled me to work with clients from various backgrounds, industries and markets, assisting them to solve complex problems and providing strategic advice. Interacting directly with clients has been a rewarding experience. Building relationships with clients and providing solutions can be fulfilling. My tasks can vary on a daily basis, which is a very important part of career growth, for me. The skills, knowledge and experience I have gained can be applied in various industries and sectors which provides versatility in my career choices.
It is also important to note that, when I started working, I had very long working hours, but my salary was quite low, though in line with the market I was working in. At no point did I feel discouraged to work at the thought of my salary. I enjoyed my job; I am grateful for the exposure I gained and the skills I left with have been evidently rewarding.
Your Career Choices:
From my experience, observations and conversations with those around me, studying what you love can be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding. When you pursue a job or career in a subject or field you are passionate about, you are more likely to be motivated and engaged which can lead to better results or performance. You also develop an inquisitive mind around the topic with helps you to get a deeper understanding of your career path. You research more, you are willing to work harder and motivated to push through the hard times.
Choosing a career that you have an interest in and enjoy can also have a significant impact on your overall well-being and quality of life. You are more likely to be fulfilled and satisfied which can help you have a good work-life balance. Additionally, because you are likely to be good at what you do, you will have a higher level of job satisfaction. When you enjoy your work, its highly likely you will excel at it as you are likely to be more innovative and productive.
On the other hand, if you choose a career based only on the financial gains or other factors outside passion, you may find yourself feeling, overwhelmed, unfulfilled or unhappy at that job, this can lead to burn out, dissatisfaction or even mental health issues in the long run.
The reason why most people these days are going into entrepreneurship is in search for fulfillment, flexibility and satisfaction. As challenging as entrepreneurship can get, people are willing to push through the hardships because they would have chosen a path, they are passionate about. I do not advise getting into entrepreneurship solely on the basis that everyone is doing it or in search of fulfillment without proper research and planning, hence, it is important to make the right career choices, for the right reasons from onset.
Already made a "bad choice?"
If you are reading this, and probably feel you have already made "the wrong decision," it is never too late to make a change. Firstly, do not equate challenges you face on your career path to it being a wrong career choice. At times what needs to change is your mindset. Reflect on your interests, research new career options, get additional training, increase or build your networks and highlight what you have learnt so far from your current career choice. With the right mindset and approach, you are able to excel at whatever career path you have chosen. Always remember; embracing challenges, taking initiative, being pro-active, dedicated and determined can help you excel at your career. You can achieve success and fulfilment.
