Career Perspective: 3 Choices in Riding the Energy Downturn
Last week I launched Pink Petro, the social media channel for women in energy.
Our aim is unite, connect, develop and grow women in energy and include men in the conversation. Since our launch we've welcomed members from across the USA, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Italy, Thailand, and Singapore. Women and men from various disciplines across the sector (oil, gas, utilities, alternatives) are conversing, sharing, and forming relationships to help better their careers.
It is relevant and timely that we launched Pink Petro.
The energy sector is taking a beating with cost cutting, roller coaster price swings, surging supply, and a shedding of talent. We've been here before so this rodeo isn't new but it does not mean it's easy.
As I write this, I've been responding to a plethora of responses about career development and progression during a downturn.
While not unique to energy, here are some insights from those discussions.
Choice 1: You can choose to "survive" or "thrive". Ask yourself. Do you come from a place of protection and control or letting it go? Scarce thinking can be toxic. Last year I had the chance to progress further or leave my company to pursue other interests. I didn't have to choose because I already knew what was best. I parachuted out and used the door to bridge me to what came next.
Choice 2: You can choose the "sprint" or the "marathon". The sprint is about hopping to the next job, the first offer, or perhaps changing educational pursuits. And while it can solve immediate needs, it doesn't necessarily get you far. The marathon is about going long and being prepared to pain though uncomfortable miles and challenging terrain to get to a more rewarding finish line. If you love what you do, don't be distracted by this and hang on to it and go long. This business is bumpy, lumpy and can be volatile. Ride the coaster and remember that things do come back.
Choice 3: You can choose to "hide in the closet" or "sit in the front row". When people go through change, it's normal to retreat. Those who lead the ship through the storm are the ones who will be rewarded with bigger opportunities. The last two downturns I weathered, ushered promotions. The best card to play when things are bad is to be visible, add value and comfort others. This is where leaders are born, so step up and lead!
No matter what you choose above, who you surround yourself with during a downturn is very important. Connect with people who can be positive and give you insights that will help you through the transition. You don't have to go at this alone.
Loss is an important part of life. We all lose at some point. But remember, it's how you play the game.
Thrive, train for the marathon and sit in the front row.
