Career Paths Are Never as Straightforward as We Believe: Introducing The Path

Career Paths Are Never as Straightforward as We Believe: Introducing The Path

Last year I shared a LinkedIn post with a graphic that illustrates how the perception of what a career path should look like often is rarely how it turns out.

Many people think the secret to success is to follow a carefully planned linear path towards your ultimate career goal. But in reality, you don’t need to have it all figured out. The truth is there is no one path.?

That post received thousands of comments from people offering advice and sharing stories of the unexpected twists and turns in their own professional journeys. It was clear this was a topic that resonated with people, and one that was worth digging deeper into.

That’s why I’m excited to announce the launch of The Path, a brand new video series. I’ll be sitting down with leaders from around the world to explore their successes, their missteps, and the key pivotal moments that shaped their professional paths. Guests will share insights and advice to help others navigate their own career journeys.

In my own career, I’ve been fortunate to be able to pursue what seemed right for me along the way. I was lucky in the beginning to have parents who were incredibly supportive of my decisions, including dropping out of college to work on my first start-up. They gave me the freedom to follow my internal compass and choose my own direction. And with a lot of hard work and a bit of luck, it’s worked out pretty well so far.?

My guests on The Path have each followed their own twisting paths, offering them career-defining experiences they wouldn’t have had if they followed a linear route. I’ll talk to them about the lessons they’ve learned and the insights they gained by being open to new opportunities. Tune in for insights from top leaders like Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrawshahi , Cynt Marshall , CEO of the Dallas Mavericks, Satya Nadella , Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Chef and Humanitarian José Andres , and many more.?

Through my professional journey, I’ve discovered that the best way forward is to leave room for the unexpected. Learn to be comfortable with uncertainty. Stay focused on learning, develop new skills, and build your network. In the quickly changing world of work, those are the things that will always prove most useful.?

Are you working toward your dream job or trying to figure out the next step in your career? Subscribe to The Path newsletter above so you don’t miss any of the incredible stories of top leaders paving their unique career path.

Bree L. Luther, SHRM - SCP - Here's a wisecrack perspective from a 30-year HR exec. A little humor? Careers are an urban myth. Pay attention to how often careers are identified in *hindsight.* Doesn't that give you a clue about how the information is integrated and organized as one chapter follows another, and harmonized into a story?

I love. The whole diagram of life how we think and how actually goes , an abit different for some woman but hey well have to put in that work to get where it is we would like to be in life ! I also luv the motto keep its simplicity and elegance is not something to worry about pretty much! I'm so happy happy that your parents supported you there's everything and I know how hard that must have been , I have a 19 yr old that's still trying to figure out a few things and I don't know if I agree with all the ideas his come up with but I'm sure whatever he chooses to do , he will be great ! So now it's. My turn to finally get not just close anymore but to really have my dream job I've wanted to do for awhile now and also begin a few projects along the way for charitable purposes thou ! ?? So here I go with this whole new life plus a 9 month old baby hehe I know !! I know !! But I luv it and I'm board and so I seem to baby my son too much so I need to get back into my own thing again !! ??
