I will start my article with a famous quote " failing to plan is planning to fail" which means if you didn't plan for your career from day 1 as a commerce graduate, then you will hopefully get a job but not a career.
So, when you start your 1st year in university, you should be aware of most of the career paths anyone like you will have, then you should decide which one you will pursue & how to prepare for it.
I will be talking about commerce graduates with Accounting major first, then I will shift to business major.
Finding a job now is not something easy and shifting from one job to another is much harder, market is not good and candidates are striving to find a job.
From my modest experience, I do believe that there are 4 main career paths;
1) Accounting firms - with exit (35%)
2) Partnership race within the accounting firms-without exit (21%).
3) Industry day one - Long & steady path (42%).
4) Master & Phd - the minority (2%)
No one had told me back in 1999 what career options were available, so, I thought it would be beneficial to talk about each path in full details over the coming articles.
Good luck folks.
